What countries do you not see any animal cruelty or stray dogs/cats etc?

One thing that has ruined many a holiday for me is seeing strays and/or animal cruelty. I wish I wasn't as sensitive to it but there we are. We've been to the US a lot which isn't usually a problem but in many Mediterranean destinations we've had this problem and I end up upset, feeding them, worrying about them, trying to sort a rescue space when finding them injured. I've pretty much ruled out Greece, Morocco, etc. Thinking of Japan this year which I assume won't be a problem regarding this. Any other ideas? Please don't go into any detail of anything you've seen which was upsetting as I can't even read about it :😢( Thanks

Very helpful responses thanks everyone. I know some places are a lot worse than others. We went to Lanzarote last summer and there were cats around, not many, but there were feeding stations and local people who look after them. I remember crying leaving Turkey years ago as I was so worried about a litter of kittens living in the hotel grounds. I’d tried to find a rescue space for them to no avail and the hotel reception staff weren’t really interested. My husband said he didn’t think we should visit those countries anymore. There’s places I’d love to see but wouldn’t dare go to as any images like the post about the dogs in a truck in Vietnam would haunt me forever. I couldn’t even look at the horses in Central Park last year as it makes me sad how they work all day. I do donate to many charities but it’s not enough and I feel helpless and angry at how they’re treated. And not just dogs and cats. A friend felt the same in Santorini last year (a place I’d love to visit) seeing the horses carrying overweight tourists around all day in the 40 degree heat. It’s never ending isn’t it. It upsets my husband too but he can put it out of his mind, I wish I could. Anyway thanks again

I think France is fine unless you head down south then it gets more questionable. Obviously there is the horrendous practice of foie gras but it’s not something you will actively be seeing.

No they haven’t. It was briefly banned in Catalonia but overturned as it has cultural protection

It's more complicated than that. It was a directive from Madrid which Catalonia refused in their parliament while it is overturned however there is no bullfighting practiced in Catalonia

I didn't see much of this in Malta

Youcanpayit · 15/01/2026 21:23

Agree with the posters that have said Malta. A couple of chunky hotel cats was all I saw. Same with Maspalomas in Gran Canaria.

I wouldn't go to Malta because of the bird shooting: https://www.responsibletravel.com/holidays/malta/travel-guide/malta-bird-hunting
