@CollieModdle thank you - that is shocking

I agree

CollieModdle · 09/02/2026 00:40

The BBC says both islands , and suggests storms last August may be to blame.

Except that the problem has been rife since 2023 and 2023. Hmmmm. And if it was August last year had they not had time to sort it out before the 100s of people on Tripadvisor describing being horribly ill in October last year?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cwy18l59yxxo

And the article on the Irwin Mitchell website linked above was written before August last year!

cleaningthebog · 09/02/2026 01:18

@exercisedout that post would be enough to put me off going.

cleaningthebog · 09/02/2026 01:20

I mean exercisedout's post put me off! Sounds absolutely boring. Why would anyone go there?

Vivi0 · 09/02/2026 01:27

I’ve been once and I wouldn’t recommend it.

We stayed in a 5 star hotel on Sal in February time, and the pools were so cold, no one could even swim in them, the running water in the bathrooms was brown and many many people took ill with a stomach bug, my husband included. One girl ended up in hospital and the conditions there sounded like something from a horror film.

i wouldn’t go back if the holiday was for free.

Nugg · 09/02/2026 05:37

I went to RIU on Sal in November.

it was late 20s to early 30s every day.

However, I would not recommend. I ended up hospitalised and only had two days of a holiday as the rest of it. I was stuck in hospital or isolated in my hotel room.

And many of us were exactly the same. I took probiotics I sanitised constantly.

The news stories are not an exaggeration and I would never recommend it.

BareGrylls · 10/02/2026 12:34

I think if you are going on holiday you don't want to be worried about getting ill.

I've just been booking a holiday to a resort in the Canary Islands where I've been many times. I had a good deal for a hotel we've stayed in before and loved. I had a quick look on TA for recent (within the last month) reviews and there were some very recent ones where the visitors had had norovirus and been very unwell. I've been before, it's a 4*+ hotel and yet that completely put me off. It's probably fine now but I would be too anxious about it to enjoy, especially since I have health issues. Have booked elsewhere.
I know logically it can happen anywhere but I would avoid.

Thedevilhasfinallycaughtupwithhim · 10/02/2026 12:37

I know two families who went around that time and both said the weather was perfect.

One returned as they absolutely loved it. The other felt a little confined to their hotel (I’m not exactly sure why) so wouldn’t go back.

Edit: Oof just read all the experiences of illness. They’re much more important than my wittering about the weather. Sorry!

Ex Travel agent here, wouldnt recommend it to anyone, it's a shithole and one of the two places we would never go back to and we've been to a lot of places.

Out of interest, what is the other place?

So we’ve spoken to TUI and think we’re going to change to Cyprus. Nissi beach which is next to Ayia Napa. Anyone been to this area of Cyprus?

Absolutely love Nissi Beach. Last time I was there it was a bit busier and dirtier than I remember (just a bit of litter, nothing serious) - there is a gorgeous beach called Landa beach, the next beach along, which is well worth a visit.
It's a lovely part of the world, Cape Greco is fabulous and just a short bus away.

I'm thinking Dom Rep.

I absolutely agree. TUI and others are continuing to denying all responsibility. They shouldn't be sending people there when the place simply isn't yet geared up to standard.

TUI/RUI can’t afford to admit anything, they have the most hotels there and will have invested speculatively in Cap Verde becoming the next ‘big thing’.

They have underestimated the development of hotels on an infrastructure that has not been improved and cannot cope with the increase in trade.

Agreed.

October for us and once in November. Gorgeous weather. I am sure May is similar/warmer though maybe sea not as warm.

suburberphobe · 10/02/2026 19:01

Cape Verde is only a few hundred miles off the coast of Senegal, which I don’t think people realise, tbh.

Really??

Do people really not get out a map of the world and google the place to see where they are going to in the world...?!

Maybe they think it's in Devon lol.

Sad for those who had their holiday ruined.
