Things to Do in Lanzarote

With very small children? We're here and struggling, we're all a bit bored. I can see there's loads to do but none of the attractions are near (we're at the airport). I'm not even sure they'd be suitable for my older DC (4). But on the other hand, he's a great kid who's used to exploring places with us so I don't necessarily think they need to be "child friendly" in the traditional sense?

We don't have a car and feel nervous driving here (none of us have driven abroad). We have a young baby who struggles to nap out and about so I think that's adding to my stress/boredom!

I'm not trying to be overly negative, just laying out the challenges. Just not my usual kinda so trying to make the most of it! We didn't choose to come here, are tying in visiting relatives with a holiday. Hence why I didn't do any research (no time because of baby either!).

What can we do that's not too stressful/close?! What's the best way to arrange taxis?

Sorry should have clarified, we're staying near the airport! We've been here 3 days already, this is day 4. I'll look into public transport.

So you are Matagorda or similar?

Rancho Texas has a waterpark and animals (not great enclosures by UK standards) but a good show in the cafe at lunch iirc.

Yellow submarine goes from Puerto Calero

Take a coach trip up Timanfaya.

TeenToTwenties · 14/01/2026 11:12

The taxis to the first two shouldn't be too expensive from Matagorda.

Honestly I would hire a car. The roads are lovely, and there is barely any traffic (much easier than driving in the UK and all the car hire places have car seats). With children at your ages we did a volcano tour, the Mirador del Rio, Jameos del Agua, net fishing in the rock pools in the northern beaches, spent a lot of time in Playa de Papagayo (wonderful beach for children), walking along the promenade at Playa Blanca. A lot of the best times were just picking a random place to drive to and seeing the sites on the way. There is a huge Manrique influence so the architecture is stunning.

Go to the beach at Costa Teguise. There is a pool lagoon which is like a free aquarium. Give kids a bucket and a net and they will be amused and delighted for hours, hunting dory and nemo.

Coffeeishot · 14/01/2026 11:19

I am taking notes 😀

We went to Lanzarote with ds was 3 and 4. Rancho Texas is great for that age. Bird show, play grounds, animal and a small water park. We visited using an organised excusuion. We also went up to the volcano. Likely to be cold up there this time of year though. Costa Teguise beach is nice.

Idontthinkicandothisanymore · 14/01/2026 11:28

We’re not long back. Stayed in playa Bianca which was stunning. Worth going down to the market and stilling along the prom. Lots of things tosee. Shops and lovely bars to sit outside and watch the sea and the world go by with beer.
Rancho Texas.

I was afraid to drive at first but I agree, it's quite nice! Like in Mallorca similarly I feel the Spanish islands have great roads and infrastructure in general. As for the things to do, would you consider a day trip to La Graciosa? It's close by and taking the boat might feel like a nice experience for the kids too! We have used this guide from ferry hopper https://www.ferryhopper.com/en/destinations/spain/lanzarote and decided to do this day trip ourselves. we also find good info here usually (when travelling with my sister's children) https://travelynnfamily.com/lanzarote-with-kids/

A 4 year old would love Timanfaya, the tour round the volcano park, with demonstrations of thugs catching fire, cooking over lava etc. Also the volcano museum.

Look for an excursion (loads of excursions) or hire a car and get to the park early . You then get a shuttle bus round the volcanoes.

My Dc also enjoyed the Cactus garden.

Bjorkdidit · 14/01/2026 13:16

If you don't want to drive book a coach excursions. They'll pick you up near where you are and take you round the sites.

Or the pool lagoon or boat trips sounds great. There's usually good playparks around if you look too.

FinallyHere · 14/01/2026 13:25

I’d really encourage you to hire a car.

Driving is nothing like what you might experience in most of the UK. Enjoy.

cornflourblue · 14/01/2026 14:14

Buses are good, taxis are cheap and there are loads of coach tour options if you don't want to hire a car.

Head out on a trip in the morning then back to your accommodation for/after lunch for a nap, then back out later on to the beach and for dinner?

Rancho Texas
Aqua Leva Water Park
Submarine
Volcano trip
Mirador del Rio
Jameos del Aqua
All the Manrique architecture/attractions
Markets every day in different villages, there might be one near you?

Are you walkable to a beach? What made you choose the location you are in?
