City break for less mobile

Hi everyone. I’d really like to take my mum abroad for a city break for a few nights but she’s not great on her feet and can’t walk far.
Can anyone suggest a city that has a few sights, maybe historical but is quite compact and flat? Ideally somewhere warm too! She’d love Rome but it’s so spread out. I wondered about Alicante as it has the long front by the harbour plus Santa Barbara castle that we could get the lift to. Can anyone suggest anywhere else?

Venice could be an option, depending on the season. Water buses and taxis, the back streets and canals are very quiet, and plenty of places to stop and rest/eat.

Malaga city, not the resorts along the coast. Its called a 'city' but more like a fairly compact, coastal village, but not hilly. It used to be 3euro each from the airport with multiple stops en-route, or obviously a taxi. Pre-covid, I went several times as had a friend living there. I found it a mix of locals, Spanish tourists and some international tourists.

Beach, picasso museum, good food, Atarazanas fresh food/veg market, cathedral and lots more. There is castle on the hill, but I recall multiple steps getting up there.

I stayed at the NH Malaga the first time we went which was a hotel. It was fine, but the room fairly small and I prefer an apartment with a separate space to sleep now.

Subsequent times we stayed at Santa Cruz apartments. They have different rooms depends on availability and what you want. It meant we could re-heat snacks, eat out or eat in if we wanted and was much larger a hotel room. Its right behind the fresh fruit/veg market along with an aldi and other supermarkets nearby.

Edited to say that I 'think' there were about 5 steps from the street level to get to the lift in those apartments. Just trying to recall 🤔

This could be good. I know she went before she had children so that could be fun to revisit, thanks.

I’ve heard good things about Malaga city so I’ll look into this, thanks. I do love a bit of tapas! Thank you for the accommodation recommendations too.

Venice is amazing but the cobbled streets and crowds are tricky if you are not mobile. Verona could be a quieter option.

I wonder if you could stay somewhere with a nice view?
I took my mum to Nice, she was fairly mobile, we had a balcony with a sea view and she was able to short train/bus journeys to visit places (we went to Antibes I think) and we sat on the balcony and watched the sun go down in the evening.

Have a look at Vienna. Very very good in terms of accessibility.

I hadn’t thought of Verona but I’ll add it to my list! Thank you.
Love the username, by the way!

Vienna has always been on my bucket list. Thanks.

Valleta in Malta is quite good for this, flat, compact , quite Italian looking and is reasonable too - there are some hills on the edges but the main centre is very flat

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 14/01/2026 15:48

I love Venice, but the multiple bridges have steps. I would not recommend it.
Bologna? It's been a while since I was there, but I think it's fairly flat.

Friendlygingercat · 14/01/2026 15:54

Venice is very compact but those big bridges across the Grand Canal can be very challenging for anyone with mobility issues. I made a visit about 7 years ago and found all thse steps very tiring. In my youth I walked from one side of Venice to the other in a couple of hours. No more alas. But a wonderful city.

Siena is also an interesting city and mostly on the flat. So is Florence.

HPFA · 14/01/2026 18:12

Avignon is very pretty, compact and mostly flat.

La Rochelle I also think was quite flat with lots of pretty side streets.

TheDandyLion · 14/01/2026 18:35

Amsterdam is certainly flat and pretty small.

Crikeyalmighty · 14/01/2026 18:42

@TheDandyLion I love Amsterdam but wouldn’t suggest it for someone who might have mobility issues as buzzy, busy and quite youth dominated - guess it depends on the person - and it’s not hot either although in fairness we went in March and October last year and hit lucky!

Barcelona.

i use a wheelchair and had a great week there recently.

Yorkshireteaalwayswins · 14/01/2026 20:35

Thank you so much for these suggestions, my research head is on! Florence is somewhere she has mentioned in the past and Siena so these are high on my list. I don’t know much about Bologna but I’ll look into it!

@Yorkshireteaalwayswins Florence is good- I’ve been many times for work - it is flat and reasonably compact, it is also very very bustle bustle busy , and in my experience people shoving you out the way etc to take their perfect pic is quite common - it’s not a ‘polite’ place . - so if you think she can cope with that it’s a good choice
