take a nappy bag or will that count as extra hand luggage?
we're travelling without checked luggage, and it'd be good not to have to go rootling in the big bag for every little thing.
any experience?
in particular anyone been made to repack/ check stuff in?

You can take your cabin luggage (the carry on bag) and also one peice of hand luggage each. So, a nappy bag will count as your hand luggage, but you won't be able to have a handbag also.

Sometimes they are strict about that, sometimes not, so I would make sure all your handbag things can fit into nappy bag.

Remember you can't take liquids..

Oh really! That's great, I'd not realised that! i should look at the rules more carefully...
will they notice/hassle me about things in the basket under the buggy do you think?
and does the buggy have to go through the x-ray machine (ie do I have to collapse it etc. etc.) i am getting worried about flying alone with a very heavy but not standing/walking 14m DS...

yes buggy has to go through x ray too but there will be people there to help if you need it

You don't have to take your DS out of the buggy when you go through security. They will come and push the buggy through, with your DS in it (normally). If they are being picky, they will ask you to take him out and carry him through, although this should be fine as you wont be carrying anything else at that point, it will all be on the scanner.

They will make you take anything off or out of the buggy (such as things in the basket) to go through the scanner but you will not have to collapse the buggy.

You can keep the buggy right up until the stairs for the plane. However, its not easy carrying bags and a baby and trying to collapse a buggy all outside at the stairs of a plane where it is windy from the fans.. So what I always do is try and befriend someone who looks nice at the gate, and normally you can get them to carry your bag, hold your baby or fold your buggy for you. I have done this loads of times, and I always offer to help when I am travelling alone and see someone else needing help.

Where are you going to/from? Dublin is still quite strict, they make you take your shoes off and things.

The buggy won't go through the x-ray. It will go through the walk-through thing that people go through. One of the security people will come and push it through.

luton to shannon

i am really NOT looking forward to it! i always carry ds in a sling, i am useless with buggies, but I can't cope with carrying all our stuff for 4 days and him and managing tube, train, bus, plane, bus...

why am i doing this??? why??? tell me it'll be ok and they won't all make me weep and wish i'd just stayed at home...

I had to put mine through at both prestwick AND dublin

littlefrog you will be just fine

I managed with both dds on my own

DirtySexyMummy · 12/06/2008 21:25

You will be fine, it will be easier than you think. And, people will help you.

Could you not use a sling? If you think you will need a buggy once you get there, then maybe buy one when you get over to Ireland? Just if you think a sling would be easier for you.

dizzy - really? I have flown about 30 odd times with DS and never had to fold the buggy and put it up through the x-ray. I presume then, it depends on the size of your buggy, if you have a small, thin fold up one they might ask you to. I had a bigger one that was probably too big to fit through.

You could put the nappies and other things that you will need during the flight inside a carrier bag or drawstring bag, and stuff that inside your main bag when boarding.
