Room organisation

We are lucky enough to be going on holiday this year to Cyprus. How does every arrange their rooms when sharing with their child. Attached is our room, for myself, husband and 3 year old. She currently has a floor bed. We do have a rail to stop her rolling off the bed. How do we make the room more functional given her 7pm bed time?

I don’t understand the question. What don you mean by “functional”?

reluctantbrit · 12/01/2026 08:07

You most likely will have to be flexible with bedtime. I would say, go for a nap after lunch and then dinner and stay around until 9pm-ish or so.

Most restaurants don't start dinner before 6.30-7pm anyway unless you have a resort who does a children dinner with babysitting service and then adults afterwards.

Sit on the balcony or terrace when your DD sleeps and have another drink, read, play cards.

Where will your child sleep? Sofa bed, extra bed in the room or sharing? We never had problems with DD falling out when she slept on a single bed and sofa beds are wider.

Keep her on UK time and bedtime will be later in Cyprus. Or you get a room with a balcony/patio so you can put her to bed and sit outside with drinks. Or you just accept she’ll stay up later!

Are you thinking of putting her to bed at 7pm then just sitting in silence in a darkened room on your holidays?

Hulllass · 13/01/2026 08:47

We really dont want to sit silently in a darkend room so yes i guess the balcony will be our haven. We are planning on letting her stay up later as we have 3 days when we return to get back into our routine. She is currenly bit and miss with afternoons naps but depending in the heat i suppose she might have one.

She will have her own bed. We were thinking of having one long side of the bed along the wall and a rail on the other but ive also seen these bed tents, have anyone used one?

A bed tent will get too hot (you'll need air flow from the air con)

There's a two hour time difference so her routine will be out anyway... especially with the flight times as well.

You havent said exactly when you are going, but the lunchtime "nap" is an escape from the heat really.

Keep her up as late as you can then she might sleep in later the next day too. I definitely don't remember my dd going to bed anywhere near that time when we went on holiday. Next time get a separate bedroom or lounge!

Diondra · 13/01/2026 09:04

I think you're overthinking this. Siesta and mini disco, keep her up later and bring a cocktail each up to your balcony.

Rather than fly with bed guards I would just roll up a towel and place it along the edge of the bed, under the sheet. We found this really effective while they are asleep, and still easy for DC to get over when they need the loo.

sharkyroy · 13/01/2026 09:06

ours just slept and we watched a bit of tv in the evenings, if they don’t go to sleep at the usual time they didn’t stay awake the late as the tiredness really did take over. What do you mean ‘attached is your room’? Did you mean to post a diagram or have you got 2 attached room?

If there is room to have the double against a wall I would do that and have her sleep at the wall side, if not you could try bringing the single against the double and an adult either side of her

And you do know that if she does fall out of bed, she's not actually going to hurt herself? We found our DD sleeping on the floor when we went in to her room in the morning, several times.

hohahagogo · 13/01/2026 14:46

Simple, reclining buggy for evenings and relax about bed times

We put either two pillows on the floor or folded another duvet/blanket.
