Ryan air and bag sizing and cabin bags and charges

I have a soft cabin size suitcase that looks a lot like this. I flew many times with it.

My partner has a cabin sized hardshell and my bag looks bigger than his. I think I might be about 2 cm over in width in my bag.

I recently threads recently where Ryan air is checking bags more and charging people more and more. I read they are very strict and bags have to be flush with their bag sizer.

If if I had nothing in that front pocket it would still look bulky.

Now I don't know if I should get a new cabin bag that would be a hardshell case and meet their sizing dimensions.

I am not the organiser of the trip and I doubt I can check a bag.

I dont want to go to the airport with my luggage just to be stopped and charged.

Anyone have any experience flying Ryanair recently?

So we flew back with them in November and yes they were being very picky about the depth of the cases as even if you buy a bag that fits the Ryanair dimensions, it’s easy to overstuff it.
We didn’t get picked out partly I think because I always bring a small tape measure with me and whip it out noticeably at the sizer in view of the cabin staff. So I would say you can still use that bag if it fits their dimensions empty and just make sure and ideally measure it to ensure it still complies when full.

Sorry just read it is bigger than their dimensions - yes you need a new one, you can get a cheap one from Amazon it’s not worth the risk as the fine is hefty.

Ryanair staff get paid a bonus for every “outsize” bag they pick out…I’m VERY compliant with their bag sizing!

They have recently had to make their smaller bag options slightly bigger to meet some specific regulation. They used to have the smallest offering obviously in the hope that people purchase additional baggage. I believe that they are now closer to EasyJet sizing. They have now apparently become over zealous in measuring, so it’s probably likely they will measure ( from videos I’ve seen in social media it’s the smaller cases they appear to be checking more). Check the dimensions and if it doesn’t meet the criteria ( including wheels) then I wouldn’t risk it.

Follow the rules.

What are the dimensions of your bag compared with Ryanair's limit? Does it squash at all?

Is that bag big enough for your needs? You can add on extra luggage if you need to, you just need the booking details. Or they'll offer it to you on check in.

I flew with them last week and they were checking bags and they did charge a few people, but to be fair, you could tell by looking that they were over the limit. I only had a rucksack which I had measured and was almost exactly the max small bag dimensions.

On the way back, they made me put it in the sizer and there was plenty of room, which makes me think their boxes are slightly bigger than the limit.

Say what you like about Ryanair but I've always found them very fair if you follow their clearly published rules and they can offer astonishing value for money. For example round trips to the Canaries for less than the cost of a bus to the local town once tax is taken into account.

It is sometimes not too expensive to add a bag on the app. You just need to remember to add it for both journeys.
Any airline might check bag sizes. At edinburgh it seems like Finnair are measuring bags just as much as Ryanair do.

It either fits the dimensions or it doesn't. If your bag is the right size and fits into the size check thing then you can't have any issues. These issues arise when people try to bring bigger bags than what they've paid for.

Follow the rules …simple.

I returned from Malaga recently and there was zero checking of bag sizes at the gate. However, security was called for two guys who were acting out and a little drunk. They were refused boarding, good call there. So it wasn't as if the gate staff weren't on the ball! From what I could see though, the bags were of normal size and no one was chancing it!
