Skiing for beginner single parent and 2 children

Please can I have some help in booking my first ski holiday for half term.

I’m looking for the easiest, hassle free ski trip possible. Im a single parent with two beginner children. (I have only skid once before)

I initially booked a hotel, but realise it is located very far from the ski school!

I like the idea of Austria because it seems cheaper, Innsbuck doesn’t seem far from the mountains etc.

It doesn’t have to have amazing runs- just something easy and simple for newbies!

thank you!

Finland is really good for beginners. The ski schools are excellent and they speak English really well. Snow is guaranteed and it is super safe. Inghams and Crystal both go there. Not sure if you'll get anything for this half-term though, as it is quite late to book.

Such authority!! 🤣
Austria is great - definitely my preferred place to go because yes, the slopes are maintained well, ski schools are excellent and the lifts are super slow and safe. But it isn’t the best place for beginners - there are no green runs and some of the resorts such as Obergurgl which are rated as ‘excellent’ for beginners are actually not at all. Very steep slopes and tricky even for intermediate skiers.

I wouldn’t advise anyone to go to Austria as a first timer on their own with kids who have never skiied before without thoroughly researching which resorts are the most suitable - and that isn’t by google search as that isn’t reliable. I’ve had several local ski instructors tell me that often in Austri what would usually be classed as a ‘red’ run is called a ‘blue’ because there is a cafe or restaurant at the bottom of it and they don’t want to put people off going there. Each resort have to have a certain number of blue runs but they are often a lot steeper or narrower than you might expect.

Never been to Kaprun in Easter but have been several times in mid to late March and always had a great time with no issues at all. There are also plenty of blue runs for beginners at Kaprun that are absolutely fine - two of my DC learned to ski there and had none of the problems you suggest.

I would absolutely agree with this.

in Austria, unlike in France, the lower slopes are steeper. This means that the green runs for beginners are usually at the top of the mountain and there isn’t an easy route to ski down the mountain back to your accomodation.

in other countries the green slopes are at the bottom which is much easier when you’re in your own with two children as it’s a shorter route home at the end of the day when everyone is tired and grumpy.
