Terminally ill parent - travel insurance that would cover me having to cancel a trip

Hi,

Not sure if anyone has been in a similar position. One of my parents is terminally ill. They are at home and not in immediate danger. Although the cancer they have is terminal they could last a couple of years, but equally might only be a few months. DH and were hoping to go abroad in June but I'm nervous about booking anything in case (god forbid) something happens to my parent and we have to come home or cancel the trip. Are there any insurance companies that I could take out a policy with that would cover me having to cancel in this circumstance as it would be a pre-existing condition?

It’s not your pre existing condition, your taking insurance out on yourself not your parent

I suspect you won't be able to insure against this sadly - or if you can it will be very expensive. Might be worth looking at some of the companies who specialise in higher risk insurance eg stay sure. If you do manage to insure for this make sure you have it in writing and explicit that they were aware of the pre existing conditions

Ive been in this situation. We had to cancel our holiday in the end. BA actually just refunded me for the flights which was very good of them. I got the accommodation back by having my mums dr write a note to say she was now terminal and sent to my insurance.

Many insurance will cover you for a relative as long as their condition isn’t like predicted to be that bad when you go away.

But you can help yourself by booking things as flexibly as you can. Or booking nearer the time.

Thank you everyone. I think we might leave it till nearer the time.

@Mancity08 most policies will cover you if a parent dies while you're away but not if that is a pre-existing condition. That was what I was asking about.

Sorry to read you are in this situation.

When this was the case for us I booked flights with Easyjet that I could change and accommodation with booking.com that I could cancel quite close to the departure date. I also booked cheap flights that if we lost the money it wasn't a problem.

I also booked locations that were easy to fly back from with a lot of flights daily - Malaga etc.

Its a really hard time, dealing with the pre-grief and the unknown but life in a wierd way still needs to go on.
