We did the danube with avalon. 6 days starting in Budapest. Fabulous. Would definitely recommend. They do the Rhine too.

Antaes · 05/01/2026 14:50

Thank you will check it out

My parents did the Danube a couple of years ago and loved it. We also did the Nile on a small boat (about 50 people) 15 years ago with them which was fantastic.

Sounds good . thank you

My favourite holiday !

Some operators are better than others, so check what's included in the price. Some include all excursions, drinks packages etc
I can recommend Riviera & Avalon, also Viking & Scenic but they're a bit dearer.

I did the Rhine when I was younger - absolutely stunning. Go for it!

I’ve done the Seine and the Rhône with Riviera. Absolutely loved both of them. It’s a lovely way to holiday.

Jellifer · 05/01/2026 18:19

Just back from Christmas on the Rhine with AMA Waterways. Fantastic.

Christmaseree · 05/01/2026 18:35

I went on the Mekong River and the Rhine, both with Scenic and recommended the company and itineraries.

We have done 2 typical cruises. The med, Italy, Cyprus, Greece, croatia etc but I really like the look of the river cruises. I might also use these recommendations to do some research!

Antaes · 06/01/2026 10:09

Very good !

We did the Danube last year with Tui. It was more affordable than many of the other operators (£3800 in total for us both) and we absolutely loved it! Prefer it to ocean cruising now.

Antaes · 06/01/2026 11:45

Sound fantastic. Was it all inclusive?May I ask for how long did you go ?

OP posts:
Greenfingers37 · 06/01/2026 12:54

We went for a week, flew to Budapest and took in places like Vienna, Budapest and Bratislava.
Alcoholic and soft drinks are served with meals, all inclusive but if you like a cocktail I’d recommend the incredibly cheap drinks package which was only 26 euros a day.
Wouldn’t hesitate to book another Tui river cruise.

Antaes · 06/01/2026 13:05

Sounds good
Thank you
Will check TUI hopefully they have Rhine too .

I’m pretty sure they do the Rhine-we’re looking at that for 2027.

If it’s not totally ageist to ask, what are the general demographics of such cruises 😆

I know a lot of your typical med/ Caribbean are family but I am wrong to imagine that river cruises are more the retiree end of the market?

I love the idea regardless, so just curious really

Climbinghigher · 06/01/2026 13:12

Have booked with Riverside. Looks like younger clientele, although lots of Americans - so swings and roundabouts (not that there’s anything wrong with older people or Americans, but I am guessing the vibe will be a bit different). It looks very luxurious.

I spent some time researching this - UK companies do seem to cater to the older market. I felt we would be the youngest by some distance and were not exactly spring chickens. Riverside, with lots of Americans appeared younger. Hoping we aren’t wading through Trump fans 😂

Greenfingers37 · 06/01/2026 13:14

We’ve only done one river cruise and I think it’s fair to say that it’s mainly people who are 50 plus but younger people wouldn’t be out of place at all. Adults only and a max of 150 people on the boat.

Antaes · 06/01/2026 13:28

Me and my partner are over 50 and we pretty much looking for this kind of age cruises more like . Just not kids running around and scream their head off not for us tbh.
So it will be nice adults over 50 only to have on boardSmile.

I was 54 when I went on my first one and I was the youngest by a few years. On my second one there were some similar aged couples and three friends who in their 40’s.

Having said that I made some brilliant friends and I’ve met up with an American lady once a year for a holiday for the last three years.

On my second cruise we made friends with a fabulous couple from Scotland who were 80 and 87 and we are still in touch with each other.

I went with Scenic who are a bit more expensive than other companies so that may attract older guests.

The guests were mainly from Britain, America and Canada.

I guess Tui would work for people who want to avoid Americans.

TheCommonWoMan · 08/01/2026 20:11

I love a river cruise (though we've only done two - Danube and Rhone).
It offers everything we want in a holiday: sightseeing new places every day, good food and accommodation, sunshine (depending when and where you go) and relaxation. All without having to up-sticks and move to a new hotel every night or two.

My only concern is that climate change is affecting river levels. The Danube holiday had very low water levels and the boat only just made it back to Budapest. At other times, trips can be affected because levels are too high and the boats can't get under the bridges!
