Valletta is very small so easy to wander round. We took a walking tour which was brilliant got us started on all the main locations and history (me and DS both history nerds). Our guide grew up in Valetta and explained how all the buildings are really new, even those that look old. Very interesting detail and explanation. The war rooms, cathedral and muza are all worth seeing. We were recommended afternoon tea at the Phoenicia hotel which was lovely, like the ritz. Take the ferry to Sliema and wander round the bay. From there we walked to Gzira which we really liked, nice shops and restaurants and less touristy. You can also get uber/bolt really easily to other parts of Malta which I would recommend because it's beautiful. Enjoy! Oh and eat pastizzi from little hole in the wall shops for pennies, they're delicious.

We are just back from a short stay over New Year and actually based ourselves in Gzira which is a 10 minute walk to the ferry across to Valetta - great base for getting out and about to see rest of the island. We stayed in a ST chain of hotels- there are about 5 or 6 hotels based either on the seafront overlooking Valetta or just a street back which were very reasonably priced and includes access to here - https://aqualuna.mt/ which is great for swimming if the sea is a bit too rough. I believe the hotels are also included in EasyJet holiday packages although we booked independently. Easy to get the hoho buses or normal buses from Gzira or ferry across to Valetta to go onto the three cities etc. Definitely visit Mdina 😁 had a great time and would love to come back in summer to visit Gozo and parts of Malta we didn’t have time for!

Aqualuna

Experience the Mediterranean lifestyle and make new memories at the Aqualuna Beach Club, our exclusive waterside lido situated in the Sliema Creek.

My favourite site was the hypogeum, it's a UNESCO world heritage site and it is amazing, but tickets may already be sold out for Feb half-term, as they only let about 12 people in every hour (AI actually says 8 people, they have may have reduced capacity since we went). We stayed in Valletta itself, at a very small hotel called Paulos Valetta. Location is great, I really liked being in the middle of Valetta, easy access to the sites and the rest of the island. I bought a family heritage Malta pass which covered most government owned sites on Gozo and Malta, we had 10 days in Malta, this may not be a cost effective option though for a 4 day stay, need to add up all the entry fees and work that out. We spent 1.5 days in Valetta, did the war rooms, grand masters palace, and an underground Valetta tour, amongst other bits and pieces and otherwise used it as a base and took day-trips, so Hagar Qim and Blue Grotto one day, another day we did Uber from Valletta to the Hypogeum (not covered by the pass), totally fabulous, then walked to the Tarxien temples (was covered by the pass) and then Uber to the 3 cities and used the pass for the Inquisitors Palace and Fort Saint Angelo, then ferry back to Valletta. Mdina is another great day trip, there is the walled city (lots of Instagram spots) but also Roman House with good mosaics just outside the walled city and the catacombs in nearby Rabat (10 minutes walk from the walled city). Recommend eating cake in the fontanella tea rooms in the walled city of Mdina, so many cake options!. There are at least a few sites in Valetta not covered by the pass, like the cathedral, war rooms, Casa Rico Piccola. I have very fond memories of our holiday, really enjoyed it.
