Long weekends in 2026

Where do you recommend for a long weekend in Europe? Just me and DH.

We want to stay in a hotel, and are happy to walk up to maybe eight miles a day? What is a must see / do?

Budget wise, we are looking for something a bit nicer than a travel lodge but not as pricey as the small luxury hotel prices!

We’ve loved Rome.
Where else is good?

Malaga is fabulous...

Short flight from UK and plenty of flights from most airports

Train actually from airport direct to Malaga city

Picasso museum

Castle and cathedrals to visit

Tons of authentic tapas bars

Actually a beach in Malaga too

Venice, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, fly to Geneva and take the train to Montreux.

Venice, Vienna, Amsterdam, Copenhagen. A good mix of culture and food/ drink and all very walkable.

Also recommend Malaga, as well as Bilbao.

Lisbon is a great option.

Provence- hire a car, stay in a chateau, explore the region. It’s stunning!!

Copenhagen, Zurich, Amsterdam, Nice- all good for having lots to see and do.

For a long weekend in the late spring/early summer one of the places I would recommend is Poznan in Poland, there is the colorful Old Market Square (Stary Rynek) with its famous Town Hall and mechanical goats, Cathedral Island (providing you information on Poland's historic beginnings) and the interactive Croissant Museum. It is also not too touristy, felt very safe and clean, lots of great restaurants and good quality hotels. Ryanair fly there (so quite cheap) and flight time was just over 2hrs.

Athens. Stay in Plaka region. It is glorious!

Avignon, Munich, Nimes.

Baden-Baden is lovely but there's not lots to do- it's spas and some gentle walking.

Malta is amazing for a long weekend. Great public transport so you can really explore the island.

Seville Is brilliant for a long weekend. We went last year and it’s a beautiful city, very walkable.

Sorry to post and then disappear. We’ve been researching your brilliant replies. Thank you!

We are booking Malaga for late November when they switch on their Christmas lights and do fireworks.

We are going to Edinburgh in August.

We are also thinking about a trip to Europe at the end of Feb / early March because it means we can do the panoramic train across the mountains, which DH has always wanted to do.

I reckon Barcelona, Poland or Athens are contenders for June or September.

Still open for other suggestions! Thank you!
