I’m travelling long haul (14hrs) early next year with my teen DD and have no idea what we should take with us on the flight. Previously only flown max 4 hrs.
all suggestions welcome for both entertainment and comfort.
thanks!!

I take it after using the toilet you change your clothes, wash any exposed skin, wash your hair, and of course do not breathe at all while in the toilet cubicle?

There are a number of overly fastidious (borderline OCD?) mumsnetters. Many of them think that having a bath is bathing in bacteria soup!

How on earth did the human race last this long?

Download interesting things on Netflix and get some Sonos or Bose noise reduction headphones!

Aeroplane loos work using a vacuum to suck the waste away, not a flush. There isn’t going to be a ‘plume’.

Yep, so much do you can often see the doors move slightly inwards due to the temporary pressure differential created between the cabon and the loo.

I think there's even a Mythbusters episode about whether it's true or not that you can get stuck to an aircraft loo seat due to the suction.

I always take one of those little eye mist sprays that you can spray on closed eyelids to refresh your eyes. They also work brilliantly to spray near your nose as I find the inside of my nostrils feel really dry on a long haul flight due to the air filtration systems. Obviously don’t touch the mister on your nose as you don’t want nose germs in your eyes!

Seconding saline nasal spray used every few hours. I take a light scarf and a face masque (I get a good quality one from Boots) - apply the mask after lights out pop scarf over head and then massage the neck and face. Water - 200ml an hour. Lots of stretches. No booze, extra leg room wherever possible. Eye drops and a cooling face spray.

All of this kills time. You end up looking decent too.

I always take a foldable bag that I can then keep under the seat with what I need for the flight, rucksack goes in overhead. Then I have a sarong (to use as a scarf or blanket), proper eye mask that is nice and soft on the inside, loop ear plugs, noise cancelling earphones, toothbrush and toothpaste, face wipes, moisturizer, Vics nasal thingy. Eye drops, neck pillow (I have an inflatable one with fleece cover), sleep spray, kindle. I think that's everything.

I take washable face cleansing mitt (theyre only small like a cotton pad) but impregnate with micellar water and put in little sandwich bag. 2, one for makeup removal and one for pre arrival. Really freshens you up.
I also take some sachets of serum and moisturiser I seem to get given free over time. It feels nice having a good moisturiser.

Any thoughts on whether how aircraft loos finction verses how normal ones function might effect that?

Objectively untold numbers of passengers and crew have been cleaning their teeth in aircraft loos for decades without coming to harm..

TBH If the various health risks some claim are associated with flying were of the magnitude they like to claim airlines would be out of crew due sickness even quicker than they would be out of passengers.

Exactly. I regularly see Emirates cabin crew emerge from the loos having brushed their teeth on 17 hour flights. Toothbrushes and paste are given to Premium class passengers in amenity kits.
I don’t think they’d be doing this if the only place they could brush their teeth was a a cupboard of airborne shit in which case the teeth brushing would be the least of your problems compared to … just breathing.

If you are coeliac, don't assume you will be given a gluten free meal - even if you've requested it when booking your flight and asked again when you check in. On one long haul flight, BA completely messed up and I starved. So take emergency supplies. Also - if like me, you have the double whammy of severe IBS, take an Immodium extra tablet before flying, and carry a couple of spares in case of trouble.

I wear comfy clothes in layers and crocs on my feet which are easy to get on for trips to the loo.

I take my own neck pillow, headphones and a little bag with toothpaste, toothbrush, deoderant, lip balm and a little pot of Nivea skin soft for hands and face. A big bottle of water and antibacterial wipes so I can clean down my seat and table.

That’s in an easy to access bag at my feet. Full change of clothes in the overhead bin. That’s it.
