“Brits abroad” type holiday

queenofwandss · 30/12/2025 11:27

Our family holidays are very much “on the beaten track” but we will usually pick quieter resorts in Greece/Spain and we go self catering or we go to France in our car.

I’m (happily) tasked with organising a big group holiday in the May half term. The people we’re going with are into all inclusive hols and want somewhere with plenty of buzz for all ages. I don’t need specific hotel recommendations but I haven’t been to any of the following places and am wondering if they will be warm enough in May?

Salou, Spain
Cambrils, Spain
Albufeira, Portugal
Alvor, Portugal
Praia da Rocha, Portugal

Benidorm. Been a few times to the Old Town side. If you want a proper Brits Abroad look for hotels on the Levante Beach side. There is something for everyone.

Clutterbug2026 · 30/12/2025 11:36

Many AI hotels with lots going on within them are in more remmote places.

All those places you list will be too cold for an outdoor unheated swimming pool.

ManyPigeons · 30/12/2025 11:45

Do you mean Brits Abroad (aka drinking red-faced gammons, mobility scooters, never leaving the hotel, alcoholism, shit karaoke shows and rude panto plays, high heels and clubbing, Full English and football showing at the bar) or do you mean a nice family all inclusive near a beach with international foods?

If the latter then I’d suggest the Greek islands - Rhodes was fabulously beautiful and very easy to get along with. Kos was also decent if you choose the right place.

@ManyPigeonswe normally do the Greek islands, or quieter parts of the Balearics. The people we are going with are very much the “never leave the hotel” types but want as short a flight as possible, hence looking for Spain/Portugal.

Anyone know if the northern Greek islands (Zante, Corfu etc) will be warm in May HT? I did suggest a eurocamp but that was shot down.

Brits abroad is a a bit of a derogatory term and I don’t think it covers what you are looking for anyway.

queenofwandss · 30/12/2025 12:12

Would Majorca be warm enough for beach days? I found somewhere in Alcudia which I think would be busy enough.

MuyPuy · 30/12/2025 12:19

Mallorca would be lovely in May and Alcudia ticks all your boxes

BarbaraKirksKaftan · 30/12/2025 16:14

I like Salou and the surrounding area. The weather is good in May. It is close enough to Barcelona for a day trip (I think you can get the train). It also has a theme park and a water park.

TokyoSushi · 30/12/2025 16:27

If you’re looking for Brits abroad in the true sense of the phrase then I’d definitely add Tenerife to your list!

Bjorkdidit · 31/12/2025 08:39

If you go to the Costa del Sol it will be warmer, possibly quite hot and if you want to get out and about you can get the train into Malaga or bus up to white villages like Mijas.

Look at Benalmadena.

Bjorkdidit · 31/12/2025 08:40

Or yes, Canaries would be good and likely good weather.

bagelsandlox · 31/12/2025 08:52

Salou and Cambrils still have a quiet, off-season vibe at May half-term, although the weather is usually fine.

Glittergargoyle · 31/12/2025 08:58

Cambrils is nicer than Salou and right next door. Salou has a lot going on like pp stated. We went when dcs were small, it's on my list to return when they are teenagers as I think they'll really enjoy it.

You could look at Benalmadena, it's costa del sol so further south and warmer.

I've been to Ibiza before in May and the sea was freezing!

Clearinguptheclutter · 31/12/2025 09:02

Costa del sol and algarve are def nice and warm by late May however the pools are on the chilly side still.

I think Algarve is a great option.

chisping · 31/12/2025 16:02

Algarve might be warm but the sea and pools will be arctic in May. Also probably not what you're looking for as not Brits abroad. Alvor is lovely but definitely not Brits abroad.
Spanish coast warmer than Mallorca. I've been to Mallorca recently in May and had mixed weather, plus the pools are cold even if they say heated.

I would second Benalmedina, lots going on there, next Torremalinos and well placed for some good trips out. Also very short distance from airport.

Christmaseree · 31/12/2025 17:40

How about Majorca, although like all your suggestions I think the sea/pools will be cold.

Dartmoorcheffy · 31/12/2025 17:46

Praia de rocha is awful. One street of crap bars with dodgy blokes trying to sell drugs to anyone that walks past them. The beach bars and restaurants all close very early and probably most won't be open until June. Its really not a nice place.

On the other side of the water though are carvoiero and ferragudo which are both much better options. Particularly carvoiero which has a lovely vibrant but relaxed nightlife.

Personally though in May I would go to lanzarote for the warmer weather, and good restaurants and bars.

SoManyDandelions · 31/12/2025 17:54

We went to Ibiza in May half term a few years ago. Pools and sea were freezing, but the weather was lovely!

miamo12 · 31/12/2025 17:58

We went to near albufeira it meets the criteria though not too trashy. Remember if they want ai the accommodation matters more than location because you don’t leave that much. Tenerife is a good option as warmer, eg Costa adeje area

Blogswife · 31/12/2025 18:01

Go to Tenerife. Guaranteed heat in May and lots of all inclusive hotels - Brits love it !!
Alternatively Benidorm new town sounds the sort of place that you’re looking for !

Eixample · 31/12/2025 18:03

Cambrils, Salou and the Balearics will be pleasant and warm in May but definitely not summer temperatures yet. If you’re wanting the feeling of a summer holiday, you need to go further south.

FinallyHere · 31/12/2025 18:06

But of a left field suggestion, certainly not Brits Abroad (did you really mean all day breakfast and lager on tsp?), but do absolutely brilliant for multi generation family groups , have a look at

I would suggest the Canaries. Northern Spain may not be warm enough (can vary hugely, like anywhere) and the Algarve will be windy so feel cooler despite being further south.
