Babington House, as in the one in Frome?

vonsudenfed · 14/06/2008 16:24

It's only about four hours, and breaking the journey will leave you somewhere glamorous like Reading. Can you not just add another night at Babington - will be much more relaxing!

Anna8888 · 14/06/2008 21:28

No, they don't have another night available

Feel sure there's a new hotel du vin or Malmaison in Reading. Don't go to The Forbury, crap ime.

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 17/06/2008 18:56

Anna8888 · 17/06/2008 20:38

Good news. Babington can have us for an extra night and DP can take an extra day off work...

Now I need a restaurant for lunch on the way there... pref in Winchester...

Hotel du Vin restaurant?
(in Winch)

Anna8888 · 17/06/2008 20:40

Thanks. Have you eaten there?

OP posts:
CountessDracula · 17/06/2008 20:41

what sort of restaurant?
Winchester has shite restaurants I warn you

CountessDracula · 17/06/2008 20:41

Yes
It is very pretty and the food is fine
nothing very exciting but fine

Anna8888 · 17/06/2008 20:44

DP has very high restaurant standards - used to work in restaurant industry and has sampled every Michelin 3* in France... so always v difficult.

He went to Winchester College as a child to learn English and wants to go on a nostalgia trip...

CountessDracula · 17/06/2008 20:47

Well HdV your best bet
I have eaten at every 3* restaurant in UK (not hard!) and a few elsewhere and I find it ok

As my father put it - this place would last 10 mins in London! However it is the best in Winch unless something I don't know about has usurped it

CountessDracula · 17/06/2008 20:48

I wonder if I know him
I was at St Swithun's (girls school for Winchester, all my boyfriends were from there)

Anna8888 · 17/06/2008 20:49

No, it was just a foreign exchange thingy.

Thanks for the restaurant recommendation - very valuable

sample lunch menu

picture of restaurant you have to click on the bottom left hand pic

CountessDracula · 17/06/2008 20:54

or just up A34 at Newbury is the Vineyard
that might be a better bet
has two michelin stars

CountessDracula · 17/06/2008 20:54

but obv not in Winchester!

Another thing, the Hotel du Vin is a couple of mins walk to the College

CountessDracula · 17/06/2008 20:55

or the Wykeham Arms has a good reputation for food (not eaten there in ages) and is right in the college but is a pub

RubySlippers · 17/06/2008 20:56

The Vineyard is v nice

or the Crab at Chievely link here

amazing seafood and fish

CountessDracula · 17/06/2008 20:56

review of wykeham arms

you must book wherever you go

sparklysparkles · 17/06/2008 21:16

Leave first thing and have lunch when you get there. The food at Babington is delicious, and if you get there early you have more time for the Cowshed (book all the treatments now, as it's all full when you get there).

Anna8888 · 18/06/2008 08:17

I've booked Hotel du Vin.

We're going to be at Babington for three days/nights, sparklysparkles - so plenty of time to sample the food there
