Holiday ideas with no flying

I am not able to fly medically and am wondering if anyone can suggest any good summer destinations in Europe with a typical summer accessible by trains. Good for older kids aswelll.

Maybe consider a cruise but don't fancy the motion sickness. For those of you who have been on cruises around the Mediterranean, is motion sickness common? Thank you so much for reading and replying l

Following. We're going inter-railing for a month next year and need to get our itinerary sorted.
We're going back to Barcelona, and also making a trip to a big dinosaur museum but I cant remember where that is. 🤣

Eurostar is opening up access to more destinations across Europe without the hassle of airports or ferry ports. Lots of offers on fares too if you can be flexible on date/time.

crazeekat · 29/12/2025 17:36

Anywhere in Europe just drive.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 29/12/2025 17:37

Take a look at www.seat61.com for train travel

Cruising is the best and if it’s summer you are looking fore then it would be very unlikely to hit a storm and have any motion sickness. We went away for two weeks in November and only had two days of rocky sea and 4m swells and tbh it wasn’t even that bad. I never thought I’d enjoy crossed tbh and then me and my sister saw a Christmas market cruise and it was just bloody fantastic. Been on 3 cruises in a year and got another two booked.

favourite ports we have been to were Gran Canaria and Madeira .

Eurostar to Brussels then on to Ghent or Bruges or wherever - lovely!

travelallthetime · 29/12/2025 17:38

Cruises you can barely tell your moving on most of them and you can sail from Southampton, 100% recommend

WonderingWanda · 29/12/2025 17:41

Which port are you closest to?

apegirl33 · 29/12/2025 20:42

I'm nearest to Newcastle. Can anyone recommend a particular cruise company or route as a starting point. Thanks

Have a look on Seascanner website. You can filter by port to sail from.

VanCleefArpels · 29/12/2025 20:47

Various cruises start at Edinburgh (Rosyth) but these will by necessity go into the North Sea which can be rough. Train into Europe pretty much anywhere via Paris or Brussels.

GreenGodiva · 29/12/2025 21:06

Just as a note, I know p and o do free coach transfers from all over the uk if you book the select fare and select that benefit.

veryvanessa · 29/12/2025 21:08

You can get the ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam and then onwards from there to anywhere in Europe. There’s a new sleeper service overnight by train from Amsterdam to Milan. The. You could go to Italian lakes, Tuscany, Amalfi Coast etc

Completely agree. We are recent cruise converts as I hate flying. Well worth considering.

I love Bruges, but it's not really a sinner holiday destination where you'd spend a week or two.

OP I'm also wanting a no fly summer-ish holiday (likely in September) I've not decided on anywhere yet, but would agree with the suggestion of the seat61 website for train info. I have been considering Southern France, Spain, Italy or maybe even Croatia although that is a lot of travel time. You can get the Eurostar to Paris or Brussels or possibly Lille and then change onto a train to further afield. There are daytime high speed trains, and also overnight sleep trains to some places which I like the idea of - I loved getting sleeper trains across Russia as a student many years ago, and would love to try the modern European sleeper trains.

Ooo I didn't know about the Amsterdam to Milan sleeper, opens up more options!

I think it's only ambassador and Fred olsen from Newcastle

uggmum · 29/12/2025 22:13

When my DC were younger we would get the direct train from St Pancras to Avignon. It’s a regular summer service. We would then hire a car and tour the South of France.
we would rent a villa with a pool.
you also have the option of a train to Paris. Stay in Paris for a couple of nights and then get a French train to Nice.
we had such great holidays

parietal · 29/12/2025 22:24

Look up the Nightjet sleepers from Paris or Brussels. You can get to Vienna and beyond by train, but you do need to book well in advance

MinnieMountain · 30/12/2025 05:26

There's so many places you could go OP. What do you like doing?

We really enjoyed Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance by train this summer.

We've also been to Switzerland and Austria but I'd recommend an overnight rather than doing the trip all in one day.

Or you could get the train to Bordeaux and hire a car/get a taxi to get to the Atlantic coast.

Silverbirchleaf · 30/12/2025 05:52

Saw an advert on tv for ‘Shearings’ coaches earlier. Have you considered a coach trip?

Alternatively, go to Scotland. The NC500 route is meant to be amazing to drive.
