I love Hanoi. I've never been to HCMC but DH has and says Hanoi is an order of magnitude more pleasant.

Not all that much to see - it's more of a wandering round type of destination. Your DD would be enchanted by the water puppets, so do make sure you do that. It's very easy to get around - there are bicycle rickshaws everywhere. The shopping is fab!

The Sofitel Metropole is gorgeous. I saw it again when Angelina Jolie stayed there to pick up her child. I did think briefly wow, how cool would it have been if we'd been there at the same time, but then reality hit me - who the hell wants to be photographed standing next to her in their swimmers and printed in magazines all over the world?

I went four years ago. The shopping is terrific and I'm afraid we walked out of the water puppets, it's fantastically incomprehensible and dull and goes on forever. Sit at the back to make an escape if necessary! It's a lovely city to walk and there are some great cafes, also some terrific modern artists studios as well, and we visited one (knocked on the door) and talked to the artist and looked at his work. Also a lot of v talented copyists. I don't know if you'd want to take the dc's on the back of a bike taxi but you should (probably already done it in Ho Chi..) -- I haven't got much advice on "sights" but it's a good place with an Indochine-y sort of feel for soaking up the atmosphere. (on the day I went to the mausoleum it was closed)

The mausoleum was closed the day we went too! I wonder if they ever open it?

I loved the water puppets - we sat right at the front which was good for all the detail. They hand out programmes so it's probably a good idea to get one so you can have a rough idea what's going on; stuffit is right, it would be impenetrable without one.

There's an excellent restaurant across the road from the Sofitel Metropole, I think it's called Cafe Opera. There are two Sofitels in Hanoi but the Metropole is the better.

Sorry to say this, but I hated Hanoi, not much to see there. Much preferred Saigon.

Can you go up to the north west - that's beautiful.

hifi · 12/06/2008 12:06

hi sagitta, only want a quick hop somewhere, is nw possible in this amount of time?

you can fly, from hanoi so its possible to get there quickly. Then hire a motorbike and explore, or go to Sapa. (can get bus there )

its definitely the best bit of vietnam, imo. Sorry about typing - bfing at same time...

DD and I went to Hanoi in 2005 when she was four (took her backpacking through Vietnam and Thailand for six weeks on my own). Hanoi was great. Water Puppet show was lovely - get front row seats for a good view (also, cover yourself in mosquito repellent as there's loads of them in there!)

For the first two nights, to find our feet, we stayed at the Sofitel Plaza. Lovely hotel but slightly out of the main part of Hanoi and a bit of a pain getting back there after a day out. Lovely staff though, and overlooks beautiful lake. After a couple of days we went to a hotel in the centre of Hanoi, can't remember it's name, but was recommended by the nice people in the Kangaroo Cafe, who also organised our trip to Ha Long Bay where we stayed for 2 days and a night on a boat in the most beautiful part of the world I've ever seen
They were also lovely when DD threw up all over the table on the morning of the trip after having a bit of a weird reaction to the anti malarials she was taking (and soon stopped taking - she was fine - we stuck to the main drag and didn't go off into jungles or anything)

We went to see Ho Chi Minh's body in the Mausoleum - check the times it's on display though, as often closed. They have a special viewing platform for children and DD was thrilled to get such a good view and still talks about it now, three years on.

One day when we were there the weather was awful, constant rain, so the two of us went to have a hair cut and mini-manicure - cost about $10 for the both of us! There are also some lovely cafes near the lake in the centre of Hanoi with great cakes and ice creams.

Vietnam is very child-friendly, we had to stop to chat to people every few minutes and DD was showered with sweets and toys!

Have a fab time!
