I'm going abroad and cannot think of how to package or box our Phil & Teds. It is going to be a necessity on holiday but I don't want it damaged.

I need advice and ideas on packaging etc. So if anyone can help or have useful ideas I would be grateful.

you can buy a travel bag for it and I think that is what I would do they are about £45

Sketchi · 12/06/2008 11:32

Thanks for that, I will look into it.

Has anyone used a travel bag and it worked?

My buggy has been broken on all three times we have taken it abroad - hence me never taking my Phil and Ted's.

I was seriously considering taking a heavy duty clear plastic bag and some gaffer tape to the airport..........

MrsPuddleduck · 12/06/2008 11:46

Sketchi - just found one on EBay - you have to remove the front wheel - plus it looks like it would get put on with the suitcases and therefore get trashed.

At least if they go on with the pushchairs they are put on top of the cases.

Thank you so much MrsPuddleduck! Just had a look and it's collection only and I'm down South, but asked if they would post anyway.

Am really worried about taking P&T just got it as due any moment with DD2. Can't think of any other double buggy thats cheap enough to buy thats also light. My DD2 will only be 22 months when we go in October!

Complete nightmare.

sport bag
I have one but not used it yet as always taken a diff buggy instead, it is well padded

silverfrog · 12/06/2008 12:04

we went on holiday earlier in the year and took ours (was essential for getting dd1 (ASD)through the airport safely.)

We have the travel bag, and it works well. We took the buggy throught to the gate, and on the way out it then got taken off to baggage once dh had packed it all up. It survived just fine.

On the way back, dh having had a good nose around the storage space inside the plane, he insisted that it was taken on board. The stewardesses were dubious, saying that it would never fit. Once it was all packed into it's bag, they were amazed by how neat it was, and it fits upstairs in the suit hanging bit well (it's only a bit bigger than some suit carriers).

We were flying business, so possibly had a little more leeway by way of on-board sizes, and we also kept repeating that it was dd1's wheelchair (true, as she is disabled) so needed it immediately at the other end. The airline staff were not happy initially, but it did fit ok, and no rows were had.

hth

Could you not get a cheap double that will lie back or use 2 single cheap ones i dont think i would take / trust them with an expensive buggy

silverfrog · 12/06/2008 12:05

oh, yes, it is the sport bag we have.

MrsPuddleduck · 12/06/2008 12:06

Have you thought of buying a pushchair just to go on holiday?

For some reason you can usually pick up an Aria (Mammas and Pappas) reasonably cheaply and you have plenty of time to look around and pounce if you find a bargain.

In the end I bought one last year to take away on holiday. I was going to sell it on again as soon as I got back but DS2 is so happy in it I ended up keeping it.

Last year my plan was to buy a reaonsably cheap one. Take it on holiday. Sell it when I got back. I would probably only have lost £20 or so as I managed to get a new one for £70 in the end.

soremummy · 12/06/2008 12:09

something like this might do

mazzystar · 12/06/2008 12:09

took our p&t to sweden last year - via ryan air too.
we just used a camping webbing strap thing to hold it together
wheeled it to the plane where it was carefully put in the hold. got off and there it was waiting for us. no problem

soremummy · 12/06/2008 12:13

this isnt bad for the money considering the price of a bag

Sketchi · 12/06/2008 12:58

Have thought about buying another pushcahir, but would prefer one where 2nd child can sit behind.

Plus another major factor is that our youngest wil only be 12 weeks when we fly, so my P&t will be perfect as DD2 won't be able to sit up by then.

A P&T travel bag is a must I think. Will see if we can take it to the plane ourselves.

Thanks for all your replies they have been really helpful.

funnypeculiar · 12/06/2008 13:08

Just to add a personal horror story - we took our P&T on hols - in at last minute, so thought it would be safe (no travel bag but firmly tied/strapped together. The bastards bag throwers bent the front axel - it was unusable for most of our hols (until we managed to get local workman to make a new one). We never got any cashback from the airline (although lovely LOVELY P&T people sent us a relaplcement free of charge)

Not sure that helps your decision, but personally, I'd probably only take crappy pushchairs on hols now.

amidaiwish · 01/07/2008 08:55

you must put the P&T in the P&T travel/sport bag to put it on the plane - if you just fold it up then the wheels are jutting out at an angle and they will get damaged/bent. Ours did.

the only problem with packing it into the bag is you then have to check it in don't you? so you won't have it all the way to the gate? or can you bring it to the gate, then pack it in the bag and hand it over like that?

anyone know?

we tend to revert to our original single buggy with a buggyboard for DD2 on holiday.

olyoly · 01/07/2008 19:55

I use a generic (cheap) travel bag for mine. I remove all the wheels and wrap them in a bit of bubble wrap and zip it all up. Every time I've taken it to the gate it has been damaged. I think that it is bulky and difficult to open/close for the handlers, so they just throw it about. I would check it or use an old cheap buggy on holiday.

ilovemydog · 01/07/2008 20:02

will you definitely be doing lots of walking?

Reason I ask is that I schlepped Bugaboo (when I only had DD) all the way to California and ended up using it like once!

Oh, and one of the airlines killed it as it hobbled down with other luggage in baggage claim.

Agree with other posters - get a cheap(er) buggy for travelling. Quinny Buzz is OK.

Or is it possible to hire a buggy where you are going?

lulalullabye · 01/07/2008 20:14

We took our p&t to australia via singapore and all over the bloody place !! We had a travel bag for it and there was not one problem. We packed it into the bag at the gate and it went on with the pushchairs.

The p&t's are extremely hardy and our got thrown everywhere even by us.

One tip though is to take all the wheels off, put the handle down to it's lowest setting and take the hood off. All very easy to do and then it fits in the bag like a dream.
