We're going to Iceland (us, DS15) for a few days at end of March. Hiring a car. This is our proposed itinerary. What do seasoned Icelanders think? Any recommendations or input would be really helpful. And do I need to book any excursions in advance (We've sorted car and accommodation)

Day 1
Arrive at Keflavík Airport and travel into Reykjavík.
Day 2
Travel from Reykjavík along the South Coast, visiting Seljalandsfoss, Gljúfrabúi and Skógafoss, then continue on to the Vík / Reynisfjara area.
Day 3
Explore the Vík area including Reynisfjara black sand beach and Dyrhólaey cliffs, with optional visits to Sólheimajökull Glacier or Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon.
Day 4
Travel west via Seljavallalaug pool, stop for lunch at Friðheimar Tomato Farm, visit the Secret Lagoon at Flúðir, and continue to Selfoss.
Day 5
Follow the Golden Circle, visiting Kerið Crater, Geysir, Gullfoss and Þingvellir National Park, before returning to Reykjavík.
Day 6
Leave earlyish

We really enjoyed the Blue Lagoon. It’s close to Keflavik Airport so making perfect for arrival or departure day visits. I think we spent between 2 and 3 hours there. Could also be done with the Golden Circle.
Another highlight for use for whale watching, which I belief can be done with good likelihood all year round.

Are you staying Reykjavik?

Are you staying Reykjavik?

The first night, yes

What about the other nights?

TooTiredToType77 · 20/12/2025 14:13

Day 2 - that's a very long day

Day 3 - take the traffic light signs seriously at the black sand beach. The sneaker waves are seriously dangerous

Yes, I've just read about the sneaker waves. Not good. But of course, we'll be very careful. I'm risk adverse!

My understanding from guides is that day 2 is very doable. Not that long at all

What about the other nights?

Staying at Vik/Black Sands beach suites for night 2 and 3
Hotel Selfloss - Day 4
Back to the city for the final night

Day 2 sounds fine to me. We much preferred the South Coast to the Golden Circle.

Sandholt Bakery in Reykjavik is great for breakfast or lunch. Their food is utterly utterly fabulous! I left addicted to their rye bread (we stayed at the SandHotel next door) and have never been able to find any even vaguely as good. They have ruined me. 😂

Has anyone driven late March/early April this route?

How worried do I need to be about possible road closures?

We went in April twice. It did snow. Main roads were fine but some of the smaller un tarmacked roads would not be in heavy snow. It's more the wind! The hire car company told us to hold onto the car door when you open the door so as not to have the hinges broken. They weren't kidding!!

Keep a good eye on the weather and take road closed signs seriously. Divert where necessary. There's so much to see if you have to skip somewhere

The Secret Lagoon is lovely. If you have time in Reykjavik I’d highly recommend visiting one of the swimming pools. Perlan museum is also worth a visit.

Thanks, that's really helpful. Was the weather/wind an issue? Did it prevent you having a good time? Where did you go in April? I think it's us travelling South that is more of the issue, even though we're on a main road
