Long haul, fortnight in late aug/early sept?

I have been toying with the idea of a family adventure this summer as DH turns 50 and oldest dc finishes GCSEs. DC have never been long haul, bith dh have done a fair bit many moons ago.

However we are really limited as to when we can go and it looks like it would be between results day and them going back to school (7th Sept).

Is there anywhere exciting that we could squeeze into thay gap that would be ok weather wise?

We are not luxury people and prepared to book elements separately as required.

Where would you look at if you were me?

Japan, so much to see and do. Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and then north to see the snow monkeys.

Terrible time of year for Japan - steaming hot

£3k per person for a 2 week long haul trip doesn’t sound unreasonable.

Thailand and the Thai islands!

In terms of stress, I MUCH prefer to go via an agent. When things go wrong the backup is invaluable

I am leaning this way for this reason

We have this money in savings so its just a question of whether we want to spend so much!

I’m a teacher and often go to Thailand in the dates you have suggested. Technically rainy season, but it has never been an issue. Flights tend to be good and you do get a good bang for your buck.

@SparkleandFlights personally I'd sort myself but we usually stay in fairly basic accomodation so can economise quite a lot.
To compare, you could have a quick look on booking.com at the accomodation that has been suggested and compare with other options e.g. you could stay at the place we did in Kandy (Highest View) for £80 per night b+b for all 5 of you in 2 rooms.

we did Bangkok/ koh phangnan/ koh Tao and koh samui 3 of us for £4700 total the last two weeks of August. This included internal flight to Samui and boats between the islands

Where do you stay in Thailand in the school holidays? I don't really fancy Koh Samui and would be interested in other recommendations for August. I'm trying to avoid the most touristy areas.

Oooh I’ve changed my vote to Thailand for that budget!

For Canada/Alaska with Trailfinders we’re paying £8k pp for 2.5 weeks in May.

However, we’ve just got back from Thailand also with Trailfinders we paid £4.4k for 2 people in early September! Bangkok, followed by 4 days in the jungle in Khao Yai (definitely off the beaten track!) then onto Koh Samui. We didn’t love Koh Samui, too backpackery but did find Trailfinders great at recommending where the best weather would be at that time of year. I’d love to go again- we loved Bangkok and Khao Yai and finishing on the beach, but would chose a quieter island to do the beach part.

Not on that budget for 5 though, not a chance!

Sri Lanka is such an amazing country, food, people, sights, the driving is something else too! We loved it there but went at Xmas.

We did koh samui but also koh phangnan and koh Tao ( both of these less touristy than KS)

DH and I have been to Hawaii pre kids and I think they'd enjoy Sri Lanka or Borneo more especially with the opportunities to see elephants etc
