Is Milan safe for a solo traveller.
What are the must sees. Is it best to use the train to get around.

Generally safe but the area around Central Station is quite grim, especially at night.

Perfectly safe. Previous poster is right that Central Station isn’t a nice area but there’s no reason you’d be hanging around there. I used to live there and would say it’s not a big city of things to do for tourists but could definitely pass a few days. For getting around, you want to use the metro. It’s very fast and efficient.

Obviously you have the Duomo, so visit inside and go up on the roof. The Galleria is worth a mooch around as it’s pretty stunning and there’s a terrace to have lunch with a good view of the Duomo. The Scala and Via Montenapoleone are nice around Christmas with the tree and lights, and Montenapoleone has all the fancy shops to browse. Castello Sforzesco and Parco Sempione are nice to see and wander around.

The Brera area has nice little bars. And going down to the Navigli for Aperitivo is a lovely way to spend the evening, a light buffet alongside a cocktail.

Is there a specific reason you chose Milan? How long are you going for and do you plan to move around the area outside the city? The city is safe apart from certain areas like the train station particularly at night, but ok if you keep your wits about you, like in any city. PPs have given the major things to see and do.

If you have the time a day trip to Como and/or Bergamo is well worth it, both gorgeous places to see. The train will take you to both places in about 40 minutes.

Dd went on her own aged 20 and said she found it fine. She did day trips to Varenna and Bergamo and liked the Navigli area. She pre-booked for the Last Supper and did the roof of the Duomo. She had a lovely time. Though I was a bit nervous. Especially when she rented a bike on the last day.

I arrived to Centrale on a late train and it was fine - had dinner in the food market next to the station the following evening too. I found the Metro great to get around (but was there for business so mostly out by the convention centre)

This pretty much covers it, with the exception of the Cenacolo (Last Supper). Absolutely worth seeing, but needs booking in advance. Milan is a relatively small city and easy to navigate.

Go to the cemetery, it is beautiful and near the metro. Been to Milan twice in the last two years and found it "safe enough" although I would be at my hotel after dinner (so not out late). Transport is good.

Always are. Anywhere in the world.

Don't let it put you off. Make sure you check in to your hotel before sundown. And find a nearby restaurant.
