I’ve been to Lincoln twice, it’s lovely. Once we stayed at the White Hart Hotel very close to the Cathedral and it was great. The second time we had an Air B&B in the same area. We ate at Lawsons and Browns Pie Shop, I would recommend both. The Thai place near our hotel looked nice and busy too. If you haven’t been before it’s worth knowing that the city is divided into two parts the historic sights and quirky shops and cafes are at the top of the (steep) hill and the high street shopping area are at the bottom of the hill. I liked being at the top because it’s very beautiful.

If you like things a bit quirky try the Old Palace Lodge.

You can see the Magna Carta. I love Lincoln. Feel it’s often overlooked in favour of bigger cities but the old part is gorgeous. Second the White Hart as a place to stay.

I've stayed in the Tower Hotel right opposite castle walls - it has a lovely restaurant. I loved the history of Lincoln including old Roman walls. The street down to the lower part of the city is extremely steep!

Yes definitely stay in Bailgate which is the old part around the Castle and Cathedral! When in the Cathedral look out for the Imp too 🤣 Wander down Steep Hill to the town centre and go to Brayford Marina area too. I believe there is a little bus which will bring you back up to Bailgate. It really is such a beautiful city with so much history, I am a bit biased though as it's my birth place

Lincoln is a bit of a hidden gem. It's also a city that has really regenerated itself from being a decaying rural city back in the 90s. Stay in Bailgate and have the magnificent cathedral as the first thing you see each day. Handily straight across the cobbles from an ancient castle. Best views in the city. WALK UP AND DOWN THAT HILL as many times as possible so you can eat and drink as much as you like! I was also born in Lincoln and am happy to die on the (one, very substantial) hill that it is one of the best small cities in England.

I had the best scone ever at Grayz tea room.

Vice & Co is a speakeasy type bar hidden behind a fake shop front.. amazing cocktails.
I've also had great Spanish food in Lincoln from established family run restaurants . Ole Ole is at the top of the hill!
Booking can be essential in Lincoln as popular places aren't always that big and it's going to be December!
Have a wonderful weekend, it's very beautiful.

We loved Lincoln, very underrated. We stayed at the Old Palace Lodge and agree with @MooseBeTimeForSnow 's recommendation. It's quirky but lovely and a great location. We had dinner at La Trattoria Da Vincenzo which is tucked away on a side street (walking distance down the hill) and is a small Italian family run restaurant. Heartily recommended that too.
If you're interested in history then both the municipal museum and the bomber command museum (you'll need transport to get to that) are very good in different ways.
We joke that Lincoln should market itself as "surprisingly nice".

I loved Lincoln when we stayed a couple of years ago. Loads to see and do, particularly if you’re interested in history.

The White Hart was excellent for accommodation and Ole Ole and Jews House restaurant were two places that stood out food wise.

I wanted to live there after our holiday!

We've had weekends there twice in the last few years and would very happily go again, it's a lovely city. We stayed first time in the Premier Inn at the bottom of the hill and second time in an AirBnB about 20 mins walk from the castle. I like the contrast between the old city on the hill and the modern city at the bottom. Another vote for Ole Ole, we also enjoyed Gino's Italian and the Wagamama on the Brayford Quay for the view. We went out to the Bomber Command museum which was very moving and peaceful. Other than that mainly just pottered around and enjoyed all the little shops and cafes.

We stayed in a lovely air bnb right near the common, where they had free grazing ponies. It was above a lovely cafe. Second time was for a University open day and we stayed in the Holiday inn on the marina. Both were lovely but at the bottom of the hill. Think of a steep hill then probably triple your idea of what a steep hill is! Its a killer! The top of the hill is beautiful. I would recommend a walking tour. The history of the cathedral and the castle is fascinating.

Hotchocolateandsnowing · 30/11/2025 09:05

If you wanted something a bit different but it is pricey, Ashland Barns are lovely.

Otherwise definitely stay around the bailgate like other posters have said.

SummerHouse · 30/11/2025 09:06

I would recommend the castle for a visit. I would get a full access ticket for the wall walk, Edwardian prison and the magna carts. All fascinating but the wall walk is my favourite.

The cathedral is stunning inside and out and has a lovely cafe which I think you can go to without a ticket.

Jews House is real fine dining. I would also recommend the Old Bakery.

If you like Wagamama as a PP has commented, the Lincoln one is a lovely location on the Bradford Pool.

Lincoln is fantastic!

Ole! Ole! Is great for tapas. We stayed in a rental through booking.com which was central and very clean.

Following for recommendations. Last time I stayed in Lincoln it was in the most amazing B&B across from the Cathedral. They only had one guest room and it was wonderful but I did wonder at the time how it could be profitable and I’ve never been able to find it again so assume it’s no longer operating.
Not in Lincoln but nearby I love Hemswell Antiques Centres and there’s a Tardis-like junk shop in Horncastle that seems to be an endless rabbit warren of piles of books, furniture, pottery. I love a poke around in old stuff!
