January Sun- Europe, near airport, travel on foot

Can anyone recommend somewhere that fits the above.

Warm (no swimming or sunbathing but comfortable to walk/ sit outside- ie no need for gloves/hat)

Close to airport

Ideally not a purpose built resort, somewhere with character/history.

Somewhere most things are in walking distance as person I'm travelling with struggles with public transport.

I'm looking at Malta but open to anywhere. Thanks

Madeira?

Unless you’re lucky, Malta will be cool, when we went one March it was only 12-15 degrees.
Malta also has very steep areas, including Valletta and the 3 cities. The walk to Mdina is fairly steep too, not sure if taxis can get closer as it’s beautiful.
I think Southern Spain / Gibraltar might be better, Malaga is supposed to be nice.

I’ve done Malaga in January.
temp was between 15-19°
Felt warm to me as I live in Scotland.

I got taxi from airport as arrived late at night, but got bus for a few € on way home.

Thanks, I did wonder about Malta but a website recommended it, will hold that until a different time of year.

I will look at Madeira and Málaga thanks 15-19 would be great, just need somewhere that isn't cold.

Seville

Second Malaga as the coastal railway has a station at the airport.
You can get a big modern train all the way south to Fuengirola for little cost ( €10 ? Can’t remember exactly ).

Yes Seville. We went in January and it was warm enough to walk around in a light jacket, about 20 min taxi to the airport or there is a regular bus direct from airport to city centre.

Barcelona
I use a wheelchair. Stayed right in the centre.

MossGrowsFat · 26/11/2025 21:09

Thank you. Seville looks exactly what I am looking for, about to Google Barcelona.

Seville is a good shout. If you do go there and have enough time, please also try and do a day trip to Cordoba. You won't regret it!

Another recommendation for Seville, went last year in mid-January and while it wasn’t warm (maybe 14/15 during the day, mornings a lot colder) it was sunny every day with beautiful blue skies. As it’s low season there should be some great deals on hotels too- I booked my hotel the day before leaving and got to stay somewhere I’d never be able to afford during a busier month.

Malaga is also a good option I believe.

Sorrento, Naples airport is doable by train and everything is accessible on the Vesuviana. Sorrento is very walkable if you stick to the old town.

Nice

ABeerInTheSunshineMakesMeHappy · 27/11/2025 00:18

Bear in mind when you are packing that although somewhere like Seville or Malaga can be quite warm in the day time, they can feel chilly at night so you will need a sweater and a coat (I take a lightweight foldable padded jacket). Alicante is another Spanish city where you can get weather in the high teens in January.

Not warm in January though!
