Budapest, Stockholm or somewhere else for romantic weekend in late January?

Just that really. Looking to book a romantic weekend away, just the two of us, in late January. 2 nights Fri-Sun or Sat-Mon. Flying from northwest, preferably flights under 3 hours.
We like the idea of cold, crisp, possibly snowy or potentially mild/warm and sunny. We enjoy sightseeing, interesting anrchitecture, art, good food & drink. Ideally would like to visit somewhere new to us which rules out some of the more popular choices e.g. Paris, Amsterdam, Rome, Barcelona, Seville, Madrid, Lisbon, Berlin, Florence & Prague.
Where have you been & enjoyed at this time of year and conversely where would you not recommend?

Ooh, strongly disliked Baden Baden, found it dull! Did enjoy other bits of Bavaria though, some nice scenery, salad bars and swimming pools!

I actually preferred Garmisch - but we went in summer - the poster asked for spa type towns - so Baden Baden was one I’ve been to - i do know what you mean - it’s posh but not exciting

Thanks so much for all the suggestions. Glad to see so many recommend Budapest and some other places I had thought of e.g. Bergamo and Talinn, plus a few I hadn’t considered.
I feel like I need a spreadsheet to compare flight times, costs and comments….

What about the Batics? Vilnius, Riga both very lovely cold cities. Small enough to walk around, lots of medieval streets etc, great food and reasonable cost.

I second Budapest.
I spent a lovely day or two in Regensburg en route from Munich to Prague. It was in summer but I can imagine it being a lovely town for winter weekend. Hampton by Hilton was a little outside the city centre but very cozy and with great breakfast.

Was hoping someone would have said Budapest as this is on my list for next year.

I'd say Budapest. I've been there a few times now at different times of the year and its beautiful.

I’ve been to Budapest and Krakow at that time of year. Both stunning cities with loads to do.

How about Vienna?

PantaloonMad · 26/11/2025 15:40

Years ago I went to Warsaw and loved it, I was quite surprised at how much. Visited a beautiful palace, I forget the name, and it was completely quiet and the grounds were covered in frost and ice, v atmospheric. Great restaurants and reasonable prices. Might be more expensive these days

Definitely Budapest. Most romantic city I have ever been to. And ideal for winter, with all the gorgeous thermal outdoor pools, ornate cafes, indoor market halls, ruin bars and music in the beautiful opera house. The traditional food is very suitable to winter too - goulash and duck in berry sauce, rich cakes and pastries.

I am glad to see all the recommendations for Budapest as I am going next week.
