Seeking the impossible: quiet in August?

Nost · 25/11/2025 16:58

Budget limits us to Europe, but we’d happily drive or fly. Am I asking the impossible to go somewhere with a decent beach or lake which won’t be heaving in August? Any suggestions? Teens want to chill. Maybe a couple of adventurous activities in between. Parents would like a trip of two of culture.

If you wait until the last week of August its much quieter (and cheaper) across France

leccybill · 25/11/2025 21:06

I thought Anglesey was very quiet in August. Lovely beaches!

Wexone · 25/11/2025 21:10

lake garda desenzo de garda. quiter then the other towns around the lake. plenty of restaurants etc can drive to next town or get boat for a bit of culture

We loved Lake Bled in Slovenia. Lots to do for teenagers such as ziplines and alpine toboggans and watersports. A few places around the lake to jump in and swim.

Crushed23 · 25/11/2025 21:26

Yes, wait until the very end of August, into early September if your kids’ school goes back a bit late. I used to travel over the August bank holiday (Lake Bled in Slovenia is a favourite) and luckily there weren’t too many families travelling at that time.

Nost · 25/11/2025 21:52

Thanks! We’ve done Lake Garda and Slovenia, various alpine regions in France and Germany and feeling a bit mountained-out. Unfortunately we have a big family birthday the last week in August which rules that out!

The Albanian Riviera is still not too touristy. You can fly to Corfu and get a half hour ferry across (also it’s a fraction of the price compared to going to Greece!) or Lake Ohrid in Macedonia. Breathtakingly beautiful, incredible scenery and enough to do.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 25/11/2025 22:55

I would look at some of the smaller Greek islands

Forgottenmyphone · 26/11/2025 06:35

Just west of Santander in Spain, there are some lovely beaches which don’t get as busy as the beaches in southern France or Spain. We liked Playa de Usgo.

RampantIvy · 26/11/2025 06:37

The Azores?
Madeira?
Gozo?
Sark?

Really appreciate the suggestions - will look into these tonight!

We went to Cap du Ferret this year in the middle of August. The forest protection means that development is restricted. We stayed in a lovely low key place, air conditioned lodges with a very small shared pool. We hired bikes (definitely book in advance) and cycled around. We also had a hire car, flew into Bordeaux airport. I love the atlantic coast, the beach stretches for 50km, access via the pine forests.

Sunset on the beach, cute restaurants, chilled fishing village vibe with some incredibly beautiful houses. Loads of camp sites and forest lodges and some very expensive rentals. The kids hire surf boards for a couple of hours, on two days but mostly we cycled a bit, sat on the beach and chilled.

It was 40 degrees in Bordeaux and 34 in Cap du Ferret. We were grateful for air conditioning!! There was a high risk of forest fires so access to the forest was restricted which meant there were more people on the cycle paths along the main road than there might be otherwise but it was fine. I was expecting insane traffic and parking to and from the beaches but it was OK. It was too far to cycle all the way to the end of the Cap and back so we drove.

I love quiet, low budget holidays, my husband would prefer air conditioned and a bit more luxury which our budget doesn't stretch to. We compromised and had 5 days instead of 7 and spent more than we would usually. I wondered if it might be a bit like a camping lodge / centre parks (which I have not been to for nearly 20 years,) but it was low key, very comfortable and the air-conditioning was blissful and necessary!!

I think I would have preferred a villa in our budget but as much as I looked, I couldn't find anything to fit our requirements.

Bilbao and San Sebastian? Admittedly we went last week in August, but it was a manageable level of busy, though it's not package holiday territory so it was more expensive.

HelloCharming · 26/11/2025 07:41

@ChateauMargauxwould that suit a child free holiday? Or was it very family orientated. It looks lovely.

Twilightstarbright · 26/11/2025 07:47

If you are happy with not hot, Guernsey, Alderney and Herm have stunning beaches and I’d echo the PP suggesting Sark as it’s so unique.

If you avoid Alderney week in Alderney then it won’t be crowded at all. The others will only be busy on a specific event eg Cobo Bay is busy when the concerts are on or the Rocquaine Regatta makes Rocquaine busy that day.

Baltic Sea coast of Germany/ Denmark/ Sweden - beaches and low key seaside resorts. Interesting history to explore.

MrsWilsh · 26/11/2025 11:46

How about glamping? The Charente is a much less touristy part of France than many places and has lovely lakes with beaches. https://www.auprefleuriretreat.com/

We went to Patmos last August and we were very surprised by the island and also the unexpected fewer crowds. I think it's worth looking into it. Take a look here www.ferryhopper.com/en/blog/featured/best-greek-islands-quiet-holidays and travelynnfamily.com/places-to-visit-in-europe-in-summer-to-avoid-the-crowds/, you might find useful info.

It would suit a child free holiday. We had 16 to 18 year olds, there were a few younger kids in the pool at times... but mostly we didn't really see the other guests.

We were 'most disappointed' by the total lack of sunbed wars.. 5 of us arrived.. peak time, managed to get sunbeds with shade... the end.

I can imagine a very chilled life there in retirement!! Dreaming of this.. https://www.housesandapartments.fr/en/33/ad-sale-house-cap-ferret-3920527.html.. with 10% of the budget!!

We've been to Holland for the last two years in August and it's been pretty quiet both times. We stayed in holiday parks with large lakes and sandy beaches and we've had tonnes of space around us. Hof Van Saksen was awesome as you can stay in a bungalow on the beach plus it has a fab waterpark and pool complex and lots of activities going on if you want those. Ter Spegelt also very nice and has a few lakes and beaches to choose from. Lots to do in the areas and easy drive from Calais.

outdooryone · 28/11/2025 15:44

I was in Ireland last year and found some really lovely quiet places, even in the season.

I would also suggest having been to some of eastern Europe in the summer that you can easily find some off the beaten track places in places like Finland, Estonia, Slovakia, Czechia and Poland. If only down to lack of population density...

Nost · 28/11/2025 18:53

Thanks again for all the ideas! Like the idea of Albania. @orangespikeyfrog where did you go for beaches?

Slopelos in Greece is quiet and pretty. We went the first week of September and didn’t have to pre book restaurants etc, just turned up ( apart from one that had the reputation of being the best on the island). Probably a bit busier in August but we didn’t see that many tourists with young children there as it’s a plane to Skiathos then water taxi or ferry across to Skopelos so no direct flights.

No culture though. Just beaches and views, Greek food etc.
