Solo travel holiday recommendations over 60s

My Dad is 72 and on his own as my mum passed away many years ago. He is young at heart, fit and well for his age.
He is desperate to go away but slightly hesitant about solo travel which I get.
Has anyone got any recommendations for travel companies that might do group trips for solo travellers for his age group?

I've been on Explore and Exodus and similar trips with people in their 60s and 70s. More so on the ones that aren't hiking straight up stuff...more along stuff.

Try Great Train Journeys, not just UK but all over Europe too
my experience as a solo was a healthy mix of solos Couples and friends

Riviera and Saga run their tours for Solos. I think Riviera now has a Solo river cruise as well.

A sibling uses The Travel Department a lot and seems very happy with them.

Jellifer · 25/11/2025 18:52

Just You for escorted solo tours. Try Passion For Cruises if he might like a cruise. They specialise in solo deals and also have land holidays on offer

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 25/11/2025 19:12

I agree to look at Exodus and Explore (Explore tend to be slightly cheaper as they sometimes use more basic hotels, so it's always worth comparing itineraries). I've done small-group trips with both to South Africa & South America and there have always been solo travellers of your Dads age, and older. I recall an older lady also talking about Saga holidays she'd taken being very good quality, but I think they're a lot pricier.

You do pay a supplement for a solo room with both Explore & Exodus but if he's not bothered about having his own room they will allocate same sex solo travellers to a twin room.

If he wants to try something closer to home first, Rabbies are a great little company doing reasonably priced small-group tours around the Scottish mainland and islands (and wider UK).

Solo travel is a big step at any age but I'm sure he won't look back once he takes his first trip!

River cruise. I did one recently and had a fabulous, fun-filled time with other singles. I used Riviera and it was great.

is there anyone that does beach-type holidays (or at least not hiking) for older travellers? My Dad would interested but he’s a bit too old for exerting himself in the heat?

PTFswife · 25/11/2025 21:58

Waterbynature.com specialises in rafting and sailing holidays. The sailing ones mostly have older clientele, many solos, some couples but because it’s no more than 8 max on board, it becomes like a big family. They are very special trips with fab meals.

I took my 79 year old dad this summer and he ended up flirting outrageously with an 80 year old solo lady. And I couldn’t get him off the helm. There were two other singles (one man, one woman) in their 70s. We all had a blast - they behaved like kids doing bomb drops off the back of the boat and drinking cocktails on deck. I can highly recommend- we were in Sardinia but they also sail in Croatia, Greece and French polynesia

A cruise could be a great option. It’s very easy to research the general clientele of the different cruise companies to find the one he fits into.

There are always lots of activities on throughout the day and night to keep busy and get chatting to others. I’ve been on a P&O cruise recently which had a couple of daily meet ups for solo cruisers specifically. There will also be lots of group excursions on port days for safe sightseeing. And lots of options for food and drinks so he can try different places.

Because of that a cruise is also a popular choice for older couples who are mismatched in their wants and/or abilities for holidays, with one throwing themselves into the activities while the other relaxes. Which actually means there are even more ‘solo’ travellers looking to make friends on board.

Look into Intrepid Travel. They don't do beach holidays but they go to interesting places (some very much off the beaten path) and make clear which trips are physical and which aren't.

Aegean & Ionian offer studio apartments on Cephalonia. Easy flight, small friendly operation, beautiful stroll to bays/restaurants /bakeries. Go in May or June for less heat, and enjoy a mid-day siesta in the shade. Bliss.😎

Not for a holiday but he could look at couchsurfing.com.

The principle idea is to offer a couch / spare bed for travellers.

BUT you can also just meet up with people where you are visiting.

If your dad is thinking about traveling solo, joining an age-friendly group trip can make all the difference. Trips with companies like Road Scholar, Saga Tours, or Contiki 60+ let him meet like-minded people, explore safely, and enjoy activities at a relaxed pace. With a mix of social events, light adventures, and cultural experiences, these trips make solo travel feel fun, welcoming, and genuinely exciting instead of daunting.

I can personally recommend
Just You
one Traveller ( the best but expensive)
saga solo tours
Titan tours

Dadhol · 26/11/2025 12:46

Thank you all so much. I’ll take a look at all of your suggestions.

I can wholeheartedly recommend Titan Holidays, a branch of Saga but oh so much better. Fabulous selection of destinations and chauffeur service door to departure with full porterage too.

Peccary · 27/11/2025 05:48

My 75 year old FIL goes on several trips a year with Exodus. He enjoys the mixed ages and enjoys the social side of it.

My dad has down a few Cunard cruises the last few years. Leaving from Southampton. Often alone, sometimes now some people he met on previous cruises also opt to do the trips together.

I think he did Norway and the northern lights this summer

We went to Borneo this summer and our guide mentioned she also did work for Titan - she said they were an older crowd.

In Greece this year Titan had a very mixed age range averaging about 60 I would guess. Their holidays have a ‘pace guide’ so you can work out what stamina you need. If any! The one I did in September was a two pace and I heard no complaints.
