New york and then las vegas

Anyone have any recommendations on how to plan this, was thinking 4 nights, maybe 5 in each? Better to book separately or with a travel company, ideally fly into new York and out of vegas, flying from London...

We have done Vegas/ Chicago and Vegas/ New York and booked it all ourselves. No problem at all. Vegas is much more sleazy than it used to be. You need to decide what you want to do - are you going to the Grand Canyon? Also, book the shows early. I think 4 nights in Vegas is plenty. Save the five for NY.

Changingplace · 25/11/2025 16:10

I’d stay longer in New York, there’s much more to see/do and Vegas is all a bit samey after a couple of days. I’d do max 3 nights in Vegas and include a trip to the Grand Canyon.

Soontobe60 · 25/11/2025 16:12

I’d just spend 10 days on the East coast rather than split between 2 cities where you’ll spend the best part of a day travelling between the two.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 25/11/2025 16:13

Would suggest you fly to Las Vegas first and return from NYC.

Indeed Las Vegas is a lot more sleazy than it used to be. What do you want to do and or see in Vegas?. What time of year are you thinking of going there?.

tanstaafl · 25/11/2025 21:57

OP, Given your username , are you taking teenage child(ren) ?

If yes, that’ll impact what you can do together in LV.
I could be wrong but under 21 are not allowed in the casino or allowed to buy/drink alcohol.

HighlandsExpat · 26/11/2025 05:34

I personally would not do NYC and Vegas. It's a six hour flight between the two and could eat a full day of holidays. Vegas and, say, LA or San Francisco would make much more sense. If you do NYC and Vegas, make sure to fly NYC to Vegas (and not vice versa) since the time difference is much more favourable. Do not book with Southwest (it's a budget airline a la Ryanair) and look into JetBlue; they have the roomiest economy out of all the major US carriers.

I don't think you'd need four or five nights in Vegas. There just isn't much to do outside of drinking, eating and gambling. Maybe two or three nights to get a taste and then fly home to the UK from there.

whatohwhattodo · 26/11/2025 06:15

We did New York and Boston. Both cities but very different. My dd really liked Boston.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 26/11/2025 08:44

Under 21s can walk through casinos but are not allowed to linger. They cannot purchase alcohol and will be asked proof of age.

5 nights is a lot to spend in vegas. I have been to Vegas more times than I can count and it's one of my fav places but I would get bored after 5 days, esp if you lose a lot more money than you hoped right off the bat.

LasVegass · 27/11/2025 23:25

The trip to the Grand Canyon is a good 5 hours, so plan a whole day for that. There are also shorter trips but still significant time.

seenabeena · 27/11/2025 23:38

Last year we did Los Angeles - Las Vegas - Phoenix - NYC

There are helicopter tours from Vegas where you can go for an evening and see the sunset at the grand canyon and fly back over the strip at night. We did this once, it was great.

Florally · 27/11/2025 23:50

I wouldn’t go to vegas. It doesn’t meet expectations.

can you do NY and Washington? Or anything along that coast? So much more to do and more enjoyable.

I know, but upwards of $400 each, which is totally justifiable given the distance, but too expensive for me and the kids. We went with a mini-bus/SUV and it was just us and two other people, the driver stopped at the main points etc. Such an awesome place.

Couldn’t agree more on Vegas not meeting expectations, think we stayed too long but the strip is all very samey after a couple of days. Freemont less so, but I wouldn’t be in any rush to go back.

New York, was there a week and I’d go back tomorrow, amazing city & so much to see and do.

Lifeisnotalwaysfair · 28/11/2025 11:05

I love Las Vegas and there are many things to so outside of eating, drinking and gambling, e.g. shows including cheaper afternoon magic shows, roller coasters, exhibitions, art, karting etc. Having said that, we do LV plus some National Parks (Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon), wouldn't do it with NY.
How about NY and Boston, or Niagara?

Agreed, it is a beautiful place. We had a camping trip there a few years prior so had already spent a good amount of time there. I was just saying that it's an option. I had a good round on the craps table and made a couple grand so decided to book an impromptu helicopter flight for the 2 of us. Wouldn't have paid that for kids though, you're right.

CheeseIsMyIdol · 28/11/2025 17:30

I wouldn’t waste time in Vegas. NYC/Boston or SF/LA would be a better use of your time. Or SF/Seattle.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 28/11/2025 18:12

Unless you're planning a quick, cheap, but valid wedding, I wouldn't bother with L.V.
I stayed there as part of a long tour, & it's dull.

(I did get married there as a spur-of-the-moment decision, but that's another story.)

I’m with you! I’m itching to leave after 48 hours, plus the prices have gone fucking crazy. Was a time when you could win $150 on slots and cover the cost of a room rate.

I’d stay entirely East or West coast, although I hear SF is a shithole these days.

My best recent trip was fly into Boston and stay 3 days, train down to NYC, stay 3 days and then train again to Washington stay 4 days and fly home from there. Brilliant trip.

The plan is to go back in a few years when the DCs are over 21 and spend more time on trips in the GC and a few other places around, as well as Las Vegas. We loved it.
