My French cousin is visiting in a week. Im
looking for new places to take him as over the years we’ve done all the obvious things- the big museums, the parks, a lot of the concert halls. He’s into art, music, traditional architecture, history. Not so interested in science, modern architecture . I’m thinking of taking him to a museum of Italian modern art in North London for a change b it would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you!

There’s even climbing the Monument. Often overlooked these days. Try the Sky Garden too.

thinkfast · 24/11/2025 07:53

I’m a Londoner snd recently did a walking tour of secrets of the city of London. It was great. Very historical and took us to lots of places I never knew existed. Great way to spend a couple of hours if you’re cousin is interested in history

Leighton House and then Sambourne if you have time.

What about a guided tour of The Royal Hospital Chelsea, followed by a visit to the nearby Saatchi Gallery

@thinkfast I’ve just done a similar one. I also think the Wren churches are fantastic!

The silver vaults in Chancery Lane, silver from the 1600’s, open to the public

OhDear111 · 24/11/2025 11:01

@Westfacing I haven’t been to that one. The interiors, in particular, are fantastic at St Lawrence Jewry (next Guildhall) and St Stephen Walbrook. There are other superb ones within easy walking distance.

Plus Southwark cathedral is worth a visit too.

It's amazing just how much free stuff there is in London. I am English but have found lots of interest in this thread.

TheGander · 24/11/2025 14:27

Thank you so much for all your wonderful suggestions, I can’t reply to all individually but I appreciate every single one. Lots of things I wouldn’t have thought of.
Ive just remembered that as an NHS employee I can get in to Westminster Abbey for free ( anyone from any of the blue light services can, with their Blue Light card or work badge) so I think we’ll do that as well as some of the other ideas on here. Thank you again everyone.

Westminster Abbey can be very busy and it is a major attraction. It’s wonderful though. You could go up Whitehall and visit the Banqueting House on Whitehall (Inigo Jones and Rubens ceiling) or maybe The Supreme Court which is on Parliament Square. That has a fantastic interior and is a working building.

What about Dennis Severs House in Spitalfields?

I came on to say this. I can't recommend it highly enough. We did the silent tour at dusk and I can honestly say it was one of the best things I've ever done.
It and the little roads around it are like stepping back in time. The nearby market is worth a potter and a cup of tea.

The Garden Museum
Chelsea Physic Garden.

Also, if you're going to Borough Market the nearby Southwark Cathedral is well worth a visit. A mudlark exhibition and a slice of the earth through history. It also has a decent cafe.

Visit / tour / attend a debate at the Houses of Parliament Visit - UK Parliament

Visit the Old Bailey Central Criminal Court - City of London If you want to observe a trial, Court 1 (and I think 2,3, 40 is the one that looks like the traditional Old Bailey. Courts 5 onwards are modern courtrooms. To view a trial take not of the incredibly tight security regs. You cannot take phones, any electronic stuff (incl ear pods, kindle, smart watch) , any food or drink incl gum, tablets, water bottle etc, no scissors, sprays (incl perfume) , no bags bigger than a small handbag. No lighter, no vapes. Huge list - check the website. You can however leave your stuff at Capable Travel nearby for a fee. Entrance for courts 5+ via Warwick Passage off Old Bailey, 1-4 in an old wooden door up the hill and round the corner, almost opposite Cafe Nero.

Westminster Abbey has a nice cafe close to the Dean's Yard entrance.

If you're in the City, the Bank of England has a free museum.

The City is underrated as a visitor destination, imo. Other than St Paul's, there are no really big attractions, but plenty of small, free places to visit and interesting walks. But needs to be done on a weekday, everything tends to shut down at the weekend.

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 24/11/2025 17:51

I'd do a daytrip in blenheim palace and go to a super nice country pub on way home (i like the feathered nest)

Novelty automation is also quite fun for a few hours (holborn)

The new David Hockney show (which is free) at Annely Juda Gallery in Hanover Square. It's a private gallery directly opposite the Bond St Elizabeth Line station.
Three rooms of some of Hockney's latest work - joyous, and amazing colour.

Have you done the Tower Bridge tour? It has a glass floor that you can stand on and look down at the cars and river, then tour the old machinery that used to power the bridge.

Dennis Severs House isn’t very big. I much prefer the Museum of the Home at Hoxton. There’s just more of it. Less cluttered. However the Spitalfields area is interesting around there as it’s the old Silk weaving streets and Gilbert and George live around there too! You can walk up Brick Lane and have a look at Arnold Circus. The first council housing estate!

It's a bit out but the William Morris Gallery is well worth a visit!

The Sir John Soane museum is absolutely amazing and really unusual. I also love the Dulwich Picture Gallery.

You do need to be able to manage some tricky stairs, though. I wonder how they got the patients up there.

If you haven't been to London Bridge Station since they did the massive remodelling, it's worth having a mosey around. Took me a while to orient myself. New Wetherspoons in Tooley Street where the London Dungeon was, for those who like them.
