Travel kettle

Does anyone take a travel kettle when staying in hotels outside of Britain?

If so, any recommendations?

I’m going to Cologne in February and I tend to wake up a good 2 hours before hotel breakfasts start. Plus I like coffee in bed.

Have you checked whether the hotel has a kettle etc in the room?

Mumsntfan1 · 22/11/2025 16:10

Not sure about kettles to bring but Cologne has Premier Inn hotels with kettles.

Of course I’ve checked! And I’m not staying in a Premier Inn.

That’s very helpful @helpfulperson . Thank you. The mug is also a good shout. I’m travelling by train, so weight isn’t a problem.

I have a small 0.5 L Wahl travel kettle which came with a couple of small cups stored inside the kettle. Its about 20 years old and has been heavily used when travelling to countries where room kettles are not the norm even in business hotels (it was mainly used for work travel). Its worth checking with the specific hotels you are using, some will supply a kettle even if its not standard in that country or hotel.

I bought it originally for work travel but its been loaned around the family. It was worth every penny!

It’s also worth asking the hotel (if you haven’t already done so) if they can provide one in your room. Many in Europe keep a few to be left in rooms on request. Usually by us brits! I like to have tea when I get back from a day sightseeing before dinner.

Don't get one that the cable attaches permanently to (as opposed to standing on a base, so you can move the kettle without the cable attached). I have one of these and, being used to lifting the kettle off the base, found that habit made me grab the kettle and spill boiling water.

I have a cheap kettle that I take when i stay in budget hotels. 1 kettle is cheaper than than the extra for a hotel room with a kettle included.

I always take my own cup whether there's these things included or not, I drink green tea and if the cup is too small it's very bitter.

I have this one, it works fine, has an indicator on it to show when it has reached boiling temp. The bonus is, you can put ice cold water/drinks in it to stay cold too.

My little kettle has accompanied me all over the world.

I travel really lite and have a collapsible kettle which is amazing, They are silicone and not designed to last years due to its material but it’s been a godsend when visiting places which are kettle less. Also as i like porridge it’s a way of eating a cheaper breakfast in places.

Thank you everyone. I’ve bought a Russell Hobbs one as it gets lots of good reviews. I expect it’s going to be one of those “why didn’t I do it sooner?” things.
