Sri Lanka in July August. Any ideas if this adventure holiday is worth the money?

Virgin Sri Lanka Adventure

As we are restricted to school hols & DH doesn't do sitting on beaches, was looking for something different for DD's last holiday with us.

Have done Orlando - would love to go again now DS is old enough to go on all rides, but Aug too humid?

DH fancies a Western USA tour, but kids not keen on lots of car journey every day.

I want to go somewhere "different" and Sri Lanka appears to have a good year round climate - is that true?

ANy comments on this package? Anyone done it?

TIA

I have no practical advice I'm afraid as I have never been to Sri Lanka but I would make sure that you are aware of the areas where there may be potential problems due to the continued political instability there.

Good point - Thank you.

We are looking at somewhere for Summer 09 so potential for change is still great (in too many places in the world now it seems )

The above is current FO advice for Sri Lanka.

we went to sri lanka in august on our honeymoon 5 years ago. sort of a stay snd tour hols. would highly recommend it! wonderful people, great sights and amazing food. lots and lots to do, we did elephant orphange, jeep safari, river safari, climbed big rock with flat top (can't think what is called!) botanical gardens, gold buddha in temple and lots more.

there was a little unrest when we went but on a tour they keep you away from the 'trouble' and as your going next year it could have all settled down by then.

Go!

i think current advice is not Yala and that is one of the pitstops on the tour. if it were just me and my DH I would probably go but I am not sure I could take the risk, albeit small, with kids in tow.

Sri Lanka is a beautiful country, we married there in 2000 and I think it worth investigating other tours that don't incorporate Yala. I can't see the unrest settling down in a year as it was similar when we were there 8 years ago.

It is apparantly Monsoon season between May and August, so worth considering the rain (even though it will be the same temp all year round):

DP and I went to Sri Lanka in August once and it rained for just over half of our time there. However, the country is absolutely beautiful and I would DEFINITELY go back if I could afford it. I would recommend a more tailor-made package, though. I think we used a company called Elephant Island, who were really good and created an itinerary just for us.

here it is

I used to live in Sri Lanka and I would say you are likely to get a fair bit of rain in August - can be humid too. But if you donb't mind that... great food, great people and a really different culture .

My DH was out there in Feb doing some business and the fighting is still certainly a live issue. In the past, the targets were predominantly military however, over the last 12 months there have been a few bombs on buses in the Colombo and in the South and East, but these have been targeted towards locals and not tourists.

I guess it depends how 'adventurous' or risk averse you are ?

We went to Sri Lanka in September (end of though) 5 years ago (we were childless at the time). We travelled around on an organised tour and loved it. Its a beautiful country and the people are great. It was relatively save when we went though.

We added on a week in the maldives which was a great balance.

Thanks everyone - I think we may have to rethink as trouble is still going on

Bessie - Thanks for your link, I have bookmarked it to favourites for future use.

Maybe New York.........
