Snow holiday for young family no skiing

I’m sure this has been discussed loads before, but where would anyone recommend for a magical snow holiday without skiing for a young family that isn’t too spoilt by mass tourism?

would love to stay in a log cabin, snow is a must, would love to do things like husky or reindeer sledding. Not too bothered about seeing Santa as I feel like it’s just too commercialised and fake (but could be persuaded). Children will be 3 and 6.

I was keen for Switzerland, somewhere like Zermatt but then I understand we wouldn’t get the husky/reindeer experiences.

have always been put off by the idea of Lapland but maybe there are some areas that would be magical without being tacky?

thank you!

If you don't want lots of tourists you could go to Lapland in Sweden. Somewhere like Abisko would be nice. It's near the arctic circle and due to its micro climate you are very likely to see the northern lights there. It's freezing though but if you wrap up warm it should be fine. You can do dog sledding and there are plenty of reindeers about and a reindeer farm in nearby Kiruna: https://www.getyourguide.com/en-gb/bjorkliden-sweden-l186070/from-abiskobjorkliden-visit-the-sami-reindeer-in-kiruna-t821164/. When are you thinking about going? It's pretty much dark all day around Christmas but in Feb/March they get plenty of daylight.

Holmen Husky Lodge near Tromso in Norway.

"would love to stay in a log cabin, snow is a must, would love to do things like husky or reindeer sledding."

Norway. You won't generally find husky or reindeer sledding in the Alps, and log cabins are not as common in the Alps as they are in Norway, where self-catered cabins are very popular. Note that weeks 7 and 8 (7th - 21st Feb 2026) are the half-term holiday weeks in much of Scandinavia and so are the busiest weeks of the season. There is still plenty of snow in most resorts well into April, so Easter would be a good alternative time to visit and also a bit warmer with longer days.

Hemsedal, Voss, Trysil, Hafjell and Tromsø are some of the largest resorts but there are many others. These are ski resorts but there are plenty of other activities - see the various tourist office websites.

Why do you think you won't want to ski? As well as downhill skiing there is also "langlauf" cross-country skiing which is very popular in Norway. There are also kids' programmes in all of the resorts where the kids get to try skiing, sledding, build snow figures and generally have fun in the snow.

Can’t understand why you don’t want to ski. The kids would adore it!!! They are the perfect ages for some snow fun! your 6 yo could do lessons and 3 yo have a go on some beginner skis and do some magic carpet lifts (I went with my 3 yo it was great).

zermatt is a fantastic skiing resort, it’s expensive so I wouldn’t go unless you’re going to enjoy the fabulous skiing.

We went to Levi in Finnish Lapland this year, it is a ski resort but there is plenty else to do and it has everything you describe. It isn't overly commercial Santa Lapland but there are Santa things if you want them. We also went to Lulea in Sweden on the same trip which is more urban but quite unique in that the sea around it is frozen and and made into a walking track.

We are trying Tromsø this coming February

In 2027 we will go somewhere snowy without the skiing focus but non Nordic so following with interest.

Issue you have that if there is guaranteed snow, it’ll be a ski resort if there is any chance of a hill. You then pay a premium.

I know, it's why we've gone back to Scandinavia for next year. We go in February but are looking at Eastern Europe (Tatras probably) for the future

I could have written this post so following for ideas.

I’d second Levi Finland, you can do cycling, snowshoeing, huskies, reindeer farms, snowmobiling etc. it’s snow sure and you could always give skiing a try if you liked. Also a good chance of seeing northern lights, and the town is pretty too.

Peonyyyy · 19/11/2025 15:29

Thank you! Loved the look of holmen husky but sadly it’s very far from the airport - 6 hours on a coach with 2 young kids is not for me 😂

looking into northern lights village in Levi via Inghams - looks amazing 😍

Just adding a bit more on Levi, because there is a ski slope there are a couple of options for sledging too. One of the ski areas has a bit with sledging and snow tubing and an indoor area to warm up. At the other one, you can sledge on the ski slope when it closes but this is a bit hairy as it's very dark! My then 7yo did do a ski lesson which she enjoyed. We saw the Northern Lights from our cabin just outside of town, we loved Levi and will definitely return

Another vote for Levi in Finland. Possibly the best holiday we’ve ever had. Lots to do- check the Levi tourist information for excursions, they were very helpful and I booked with them prior to our holiday.
