Malaga in winter?

weegiemum · 17/11/2025 14:08

My dh has just managed to get a few days off in January. We were thinking about a few days in the sun, and Malaga has been suggested (we’ve flown there before but always just hired a car and headed out).

Looking at going on the 1st January. Will everything be closed or can we have a good time? We’re not party animals but enjoy good food and wine!

thanks a lot!

We went with my sister to Malaga in January 2023 and it was really nice. Ofc the 1st of Jan should be a holiday, so naturally fewer options. But in general there are things to do, we didn't feel isolated or bored! If you want to take a look, I am sending you some blogs we found good info for our trip there https://www.guidetomalaga.com/events-in-malaga/winter-in-malaga/10-things-to-do-in-malaga-in-january/ and https://www.ferryhopper.com/en/destinations/spain/malaga . We did the hammam it was very nice, if the weather allows it many many nice walks around the beautiful city etc. I hope that helps!

Thanks @daphniI’ll take a look at the blogs this evening. We’ve found a nice apartment to rent for a week or so and flights aren’t bad (coming from Scotland). Any restaurants I’ve looked at seem to be open on the 1st so we won’t starve!!

It’s a really good time to visit as they celebrate the festival of the 3 kings on the 6th January in Spain so everything is very festive still (unlike here!). Lots of amazing lights and parades and processions and just a generally nice atmosphere and weather is normally mild

We were there for last ew Year. A lot of places will be closed on 1st Jan as NYE doesn’t start for the Spanish until late then they party into the morning. We love that part of Spain at that time of the year. A bit of winter sun reallyhelps the soul.

If you are there on NYE make sure that you make a reservation for dinner well in advance. Everywhere will be booked up solid as it's a big celebration and The new year celebrations in a Spanish restaurant shouldn't be missed.
Many years ago in my misspent youth I ended up in A&E in a Málaga hospital on NYE because someone let off a firecracker and it exploded right behind me making my jump and snap my tendon falling in a pothole . A&E was fun on NYE ( no it actually was!) they did let me out with leg strapped up in a half plaster in time for out dinner reservation luckily but I had to be carried in ! Sadly with no painkillers either, so what with trying to dull the pain of that and the 12 grapes and sips of wine ritual I got rather drunk that night ..

Like a PP has said 5th Jan eve is a big party night but 6th Jan is like Christmas Day in Spain so almost everything is closed so if you're still there then make sure you have all your provisions if SC, you have a restaurant booking or your hotel serves meals or else it's whatever the garage has for dinner.
