What to do in Sydney?

7 weeks tomorrow (not that I'm counting!) till we fly to Oz.

We have our first week in Sydney. We have friends and family there, but just wanted to check with you all what are the absolute must do/see things.

I've been with work a few times, so have had limited time to explore. Obviously we have to do the harbour cruise, but what else must we do?

the aquarium!

maidamess · 06/06/2008 22:16

Taronga Zoo. It is amazing, the views across the bay will blow you away and the free bird show will blow your socks off too.

Go to Balmoral beach. and have tea and cakes at The Bathers Pavillion which is right on the beach. It is lovely.

Raffaella · 06/06/2008 22:19

Take the ferry to Manly. That was good. Otherwise thought it was the most boring city ever.

BecauseImWorthIt · 06/06/2008 22:20

Oh yes - I've been to Balmoral beach! Client took me there and we had a lovely lunch. I'd quite forgotten about it.

Littlelapin - I really can't wait. I have been with work about 5 or 6 times, but it's so different being there on your own. I'm so excited about it I can't tell you!

Err - go, Maidamess!!!

Well, Because, its not quite as simple as that. I actually went last year and had a great time, but the organisation of 3 children, job, dh taking time off work was not easy.

And this year one set of grandparents and poss. babysitters are out of action. So daft as it may seem, I don't think it will be possible....

BecauseImWorthIt · 06/06/2008 22:27

Oh, problems, schmoblems ...

Simple. DH just has to deal with it!

No its not like that...we want to spend money on a family holiday...and last year I spent £1000 in a week in Sydney! Shocking!

FWIW I'm the first one to shout 'let your dh cope' but I don't think its fair this time.I'd be mightily hacked off if he was going!

BecauseImWorthIt · 06/06/2008 22:41

Oh well, if you're going to play the reasonable card ... !

It's costing us an eye-watering amount of money, especially as both dcs qualify as adults, in terms of their fares.

But hopefully it will be a real family holiday to remember.

Aquarium is near Darling Harbour iirc - here's the website - the underwater tunnel with sharks is amazing!

bellabelly · 06/06/2008 23:18

Also remember loving the botanical gardens with giant fruitbats hanging from the trees.

BecauseImWorthIt · 07/06/2008 10:49

Thanks, bella!

Bridge Walk! Choose a time that allows you to go up in daylight, but dark by the time you've got back.

singersgirl · 07/06/2008 11:15

How old are your children? We did a day bus trip to the Blue Mountains as well - ours were 5 and 2, but enjoyed the chairlifty thing and the forest trails. We also did the Bridge Walk (not the children, obviously); got an Explorer-type bus to Bondi and played on the beach; ferry to Manly and the small aquarium there; big aquarium at Darling Harbour and just generally being flaneurs round all the yachts; the Fish Market for lunch; the naval museum was good. If yours are little there is a great playground near the IMAX in Darling Harbour - Tumbalong Park or something. We also went up some tower/view thing - can't remember details.

Had a lovely time. I am v. jealous!

BecauseImWorthIt · 07/06/2008 11:49

Not little - 16 and 13!

Eat at the fishmarket.

Utterly fabulous.

sunnydelight · 10/06/2008 06:27

With that age, definitely the Bridge Climb and one of those Harbour jet trips - very fast boats, looks like good fun. It's not exactly beach weather around here at the moment, but Palm Beach is always worth a trip (one of the aussie soaps is shot there - Home and Away?). Fish and chips at Doyles at Watsons Bay is a must do. Manly is good for just hanging out. It's whale watching season as well at the moment; the boats go from Circular Quay or Darling Harbour. Chinatown is a fun place to eat in the evenings (and right beside Darling Harbour). If girls, Paddington Market is good fun on a Saturday (and browse the shops along Oxford Street on the way). From there you can hop on a bus to Bondi - it's cleaned up it's act recently and there's a fab clifftop walk over to Bronte.
