Mid Nov break Scotland

Looking for a couple of nights break next week in Scotland as will be based in Glasgow for work. Ideally travelling by train but can hire a car if need be. Going to Edinburgh in December so looking for others ideas. Quite like the idea of a peaceful time, stroll / browse round town, just a relaxing break really! Any recommendations for towns and hotel stays please?

Fort William

How about Auchrannie hotel on Arran? Train from Glasgow to Troon or Ardrossan and then ferry across. Or Pitlochry is nice this time of year- trains from Glasgow- it has lots of hotels.

Oban

I'd stay in Glasgow to be honest. There's lots more you can do in a city when it's cold and dark and the weather is shite.

Stirling or Pitlochry - easy to get to from Glasgow.

What's your hotel budget?

Arran is a very good call for this - easy public transport, feels like a proper adventure on the ferry, still has some things open out of season and the autumn colours will be amazing!

If not, head to Stirling, Perth or Pitlochry on the train for similar reasons - great autumn colours, some reasonable shops / coffee / entertainment etc.

The other place would be Aviemore, the forest there at this time of year is amazing.

I would not go Fort William in November with no transport out of town! Such a dreary town and half shut for the season...

We had a lovely November break in Braemar last year and just had a nice weekend in Ballater this weekend gone. Unfortunately for Braemar you would need to drive. Lovely wee village with a couple of decent dinner options and it’s free to walk through the Balmoral grounds at this time of year.

Birnam and Dunkeld. Beautiful at this time of year and easy access by train.

I was going to suggest Pitlochry too.

Arran is a great shout although the ferry does get cancelled quite a lot because of bad weather. Pitlochry is also nice and has a train station.

If it’s a country vibe you fancy then Perth or Pitlochry. If you go to Arran without a car you will be stuck in Brodick or tied to very limited bus services. We’d go in summer with bikes and no car but not in the winter. Our recent experience with the ferry hasn’t been great either so we wouldn’t go if we absolutely had to be back for work.

There is shedloads to do in Glasgow though…lots of museums and art galleries, amazing shopping, great food.

Thanks all, ended up going to Pitlochry! It was very nice indeed, beautiful weather for a walk, lots of cosy pubs and friendly locals.
