Hi, thinking about a trip with young adult and teen DC after Xmas. Trying to decide whether to stay in a riad in the city or a bit further out in a hotel? Does anyone have any recommendations for either?

many thanks!

If you want to experience Morocco, then stay in a Riad. If you want modern convenience but where you could be anywhere - then get a hotel in the new city.

if you go for a Riad - then Riad Itrane in the Medina. A fantastic Riad. The nicest staff who know the city inside and will help you out with anything from picking you up from the airport, sorting guide or recommending a restaurant. Right in the heart of the Medina.

We loved staying in a Riad in the middle of the old part of Marrakesh. I can’t remember what it was called, but I’d riads over staying in an anodyne western style hotel.

Agree with @Effic a riad is an amazing experience. We stayed in Riad Anyssates and it was gorgeous. Looks like a door in an old wall and then you walk through it's amazing!!

I loved being in a riad in the medina. It was super quiet but I could walk to the square in a couple of minutes, and pop back and forth as often as I liked. And they're all just such beautiful places with incredible hosts. When I was trying to choose one it was really difficult because they ALL got spectacular reviews of the properties and their owners.

I was on a budget and chose Riad Maud. It had a huge orange tree growing through the middle and I could pick oranges from my second floor balcony. And of course the owners were wonderful. I can't imagine going to Marrakech and staying in a modern hotel outside the old town. What a waste of an amazing opportunity!

Following for Riad recommendations, heading to Marrakesh and Essouira next year.

I have been a couple of times before and would recommend a guided tour when you first get to Marrakesh, it’s quite the culture shock and can be a little overwhelming at first.

I stayed in a Riad when I went and loved it. I’ve forgotten the name of it now though.

We’ve twice stayed at Riad Noos Noos. It is absolutely exquisite and has a rooftop balcony where you can watch the storks in their nests. The owner is lovely and I still dream about the morning bread with fig jam.

We stayed in Les Jardins de la koutoubia , hotel but on the edge of the medina. It was fabulous. They upgraded us to a mini suite. Roses everywhere when we were there.

@wonderstuff

i would highly recommend going from Marrakech to Imlil and staying for a night in the Atlas mountains - stunning! You can great guides who can take you on as long or short hikes as you like. Then on to Essaouria

We stayed in Riad Matins de Marrakech on the edge of the Medina, but easy to walk everywhere. It was gorgeous and the people were just lovely. I chose it as taxis could drop off and pick up right outside despite it being so central. Some Riads are so deep in the Medina you can’t do that . Would recommend, it was brilliant

I have been to Imlil, was nearly 30 years ago though! Visited on my university geography field trip! Don’t think we have time for mountains and the beach on this trip sadly.
