Wedding Anniversary trip - Scotland

Looking for recommendations for somewhere for two nights in Scotland to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. It will be in December so a nippy one!

Edinburgh as the market is on but it will be pricey. Oban is lovely and the premier inn is central and clean plus if the weather isn’t wild you can go to Mull and/or Iona.

what are you looking for from the trip, scenery, history, food, culture?

MiddleAgedDread · 29/10/2025 17:40

What sort of thing do you want? city break, luxury resort type hotel, country pub with good food…..?? Driving, flying, public transporting??

Sprig1 · 29/10/2025 17:49

How about The Torridon?

BoredZelda · 29/10/2025 17:54

I second Edinburgh. It is a lovely place all decorated for Christmas.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 29/10/2025 17:57

I always recommend Arran. Auchrannie probably has special deals over the winter period. The big fly in the ointment might be ferry problems, which for a 2-day trip is probably enough to say forget it this time. Edinburgh is wonderful, but so cold in December! The wind comes straight off the North Sea. Glasgow might be a bit less grim. There's an awful lot to see and do in Glasgow.

MiddleAgedDread · 29/10/2025 17:59

I think Glasgow has the potential to be more grim than Edinburgh, it’s always wetter, windier and has this ability to be permanently damp for days which you rarely get on the east side of the country.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 29/10/2025 18:01

Yes, that's true. Soaked to the skin and not quite so cold, or frozen to the bone and feeling like your ears are going to drop off? What a choice!

MiddleAgedDread · 29/10/2025 18:15

I’d rather be cold and dry than damp!! The majority of the time the wind doesn’t come off the North Sea anyway, it comes from the west (and dumps the wet stuff on Glasgow on the way!)

December in many rural or islands of Scotland can be dismal. Lots of places closed for the season, hotels 95% empty, west coast can be minging wet....

Edinburgh would be good, or come up a little too Stirling. There's the Trossachs if you get a nice day to see lochs or climb a mountain, Stirling has the castle, the Wallace Monument, some museums, nice restaurants and cafes. Edinburgh by train for a day out. A more adventurous place....

Edinburgh is ace in winter. From great shops and cafes, to nice botanic gardens, Dean Village, modern art museums, portrait gallery and more (all free...), clamber up Authurs Seat etc. You won't go wrong in 'burgh.

Both are very accessible from south of the border, and save an extra few hours schlep up to Cairngorms or out to Islands for what is only a weekend...

I'd say Edinburgh too but, if you live in or near London, why not spend the first night travelling up on the Caledonian Sleeper train? It's a fantastic experience and will make your trip a bit more memorable.

Or, if budget permits, stay at a luxury destination hotel - maybe, Cromlix?

Happy Anniversary! Scotland's great.

Although, the Caldedonian Sleeper from Euston, which I did on a bucket list trip this year, is <thinks> "a bit overpriced" #BeKind.

The Lovat Hotel, Fort Augustus. Best place in the highlands we’ve stayed in hands down, have returned 5+ times now.
Food is Michelin worthy, I think the chef is AA/AAA rosettes.
Perfect location for trip down Loch Ness, jaunt up to Inverness, or heading towards the West to see Glenfinnan, Eilean Donan Castle and even Isle of Skye.

BellissimoGecko · 29/10/2025 22:07

Where are you based? I’m guessing close to the border if you only want to go for two nights?

What do you want? luxury? sightseeing? city? nature? etc.

The OP only wants to go for 2 nights…

Arran2024 · 29/10/2025 22:13

Are you flying? If so you might as well stay in the city you fly into. For me that would be Edinburgh.
