Overnight Amtrak Train

Has anyone been on one? We're looking at Alaska cruises and some of them have a two night stay in Chicago then 3 day train journey to Seattle.
I've had a look online but can't really get a sense of what the train cabins are like.
I watched the Sex & the City episode where Carrie & Samantha get the train to California and have a shower over the sink so that's my frame of reference😆

I have done overnight amtrak, but in a seat rather than a cabin. Also it was 20 years ago! The seats were massive and the trains were very empty so I could usually sprawl over two seats. Overall I would say the trains are not at all luxurious (unless they have been significantly upgraded over the past couple of decades), but the views are spectacular. They also go very very slowly if you are used to European trains, and the people on board were, er, an eclectic bunch! When we told people in America we were getting the train from Chicago to LA and up to san Francisco most people seemed unaware it was even possible, let alone why we would do it. I don't know if you still get food included with a cabin (I'm sure you used to), but it was proper crockery and cutlery, albeit on the basic end of cooking.

It was a great way of getting a sense of the vastness of the country though. And I loved Chicago

Omg how exciting! I have never been on an Amtrak train but I’m obsessed with travel vloggers on YouTube that ride them - have a look at Jeb Brooks on YouTube - he has a 3 day Amtrak sleeper train journey that might give you a good idea.

No advise on the train but I did a nine night Alaskan cruise this May and it was incredible.

I did an overnight trip from New Orleans to DC in the ‘90s and loved it. We paid for a Roomette which was seats and a table that converted into bunk beds. Even had a small loo in there. We loved it!

Youtube channel 'grounded life travel' has loads of videos of all the cabins on all the routes. It is a middle age couple who permanently travel.

I did coast to coast on Amtrak in 2015 just in the seats section.

Was an amazing experience. So glad I did it.

Haven't done over night but have gone city to city by Amtrak.

Pros - massive seats, quite cheap, loads of luggage space, gorgeous scenery.

Cons - REALLLYYY slow, customer services is - patchy (our train was 1.5 hours late leaving Boston and no one could tell us why or when it would arrive, let alone apologise or offer compensation), not sure if we just had an old fashioned train but station announcements seemed to consist of a crackly PA and a man walking up and down the train calling out the stops when were were near.

Have you ever been on a sleeper train anywhere else before? If not, I wouldn't personally start with a three day journey on Amtrak. Personally I enjoy sleeper trains but they are a bit of an endurance sport at times.

Thanks everyone
we’ve done a bit of research & decided against the train.
definitely want to do the cruise though!
