We intending to do a long weekend - Thurs to Tues early December. First weekend just the two of us alone, since having our son 17 yrs ago! Any recommendations ?

Form something totally different, have a look and see if you can grab cheap flights to Thessaloniki. I went by chance and it was delightful! So much history, great museums, beautiful (and cheap!) food, and lovely bars. We went in early December and everywhere was dressed so nicely for Xmas. All the bars and restaurants had heated outdoor seating. It was really lovely. More mainstream, I also adore Palma

The obvious ones would be Rome, Amsterdam, Vienna - all good in the winter.

Pretty much any Italian Italian city, tbh, inc the less well known ones like Pafua, Bologna or Trieste.

Munich or Berlin?

We really liked Ljubljana recently - easy to cover in just a few days.

I really like Lisbon. It feels safe and clean. The trams are fun, though they can be busy. You also have the option of a trip to Sintra which is pretty spectcular

In December - Seville! Weather still nice in the daytime, though jacket maybe needed in the evening. Great food and beautiful things to see.

We went to Copenhagen in September and absolutely loved it! Not sure how cold it will be in December tho….

If you are starting in London, you can take the train to Nice or Barcelona for the weekend. Look at “man in seat 61” website for details on the best trains to book.

I went to Copenhagen in early December last year. It was pretty cold but absolutely lovely. The tivoli gardens were lit up for Christmas.

Thursday to Tuesday is quite a long time for a city break so I'd choose a bigger city or somewhere you can go on day trips if you run out of things to do in the base city.

Nice might be good as there are lots of other towns and villages along the coast worth seeing.

Will the weather be a factor? Seville is possibly the nearest city where you are likely to get sunny days. Places like Cadiz can be included to fill the days.

We enjoyed Copenhagen in Winter too. You can also take a train from there to Malmo in Sweden as a day trip.

Seville, it’s fantastic. The perfect size for a city break as everything is walkable and everything is beautiful. You will most likely get good weather, maybe not sunbathing but certainly sunny enough to sit outside. It’s my favourite place.

Madrid. Fantastic city. Felt much safer and less touristy than Barcelona. The food markets are amazing. We had 4 nights/5 days which was possibly a day too long; we'd have done a day trip to Toledo by train if not for fact we had activities booked most days.

waitamo · 27/10/2025 11:32

You have four days + which is a generous amount of time for a city break. So if you haven't already been it has to be Rome.

I don't need to tell you how fabulous it is, and with the time you have you will see it more or less at leisure with plenty of time for rest, recuperation, and fabulous grub!

BIWI · 27/10/2025 11:38

What kind of things do you like to do?

EleanorReally · 27/10/2025 11:39

Bruges?

StokePotteries · 27/10/2025 11:41

My top choice would be Budapest
Vienna
Saltzburg
Paris or Florence if you love art
Lisbon is fascinating with a day trip to Sintra which is amazing

EverythingIsComputer · 27/10/2025 11:57

Antwerp, Gent, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Den Haag or a combo of a couple.

angelcake20 · 27/10/2025 23:20

Lots of good suggestions already. If you like history, consider Berlin or Nuremberg - lots to see and Christmas markets.
