It’s my husbands 50th in January and I am thinking about a trip to Tallinn - has anyone been in January? Is it too cold to be enjoyable? If not, does anyone have any hotels they could reccomend please?

Not been in January, but went there as part of a cruise in May, it was still fresh then. Wikipedia says the mean daily maximum is -0.7 and the mean daily minimum is -5.5 so yes, it’s cold! Also, the Old Town is very cobbly, so it might be slippy to walk around. But if you love the cold, it’s probably good!

I don't think the hotels are particularly expensive there so you should be able to find a good one for a decent price.

I've been there many times. It is a beautiful place. In January it can be -15 and of course dark very early.

We stayed at "Rixwell Collection Savoy Boutique Hotel by TallinnHotels" (hotel names are often ridiculously long!) which was great.

Tallinn is not super-expensive, but it's not cheap considering it's ex-Soviet. Prices are comparable to the UK but cheaper than London.

The KGB museum is worth a visit. Afterwards you can walk past the Russian embassy and "pay your respects".

We stayed in the Hilton overlooking the park, and had access to Exec Lounge which was OK, and hotels are not expensive. I did not like Tallinn as much as I thought I might (having been all over Europe). The old town is nice enough (but yes, cobbly, and there is not much to it, no dramatic main square like you get in most), quite enjoyed the TV tower (miles out, but transport is excellent) and Proton invention museum, and the city walls / bastion. Easy to get to the airport, which isn't far out of town. It is relatively expensive for restaurants and pubs (UK prices) esp. if your price point is the other European cities that you might think are similar. We had just come over on the ferry from Finland, so it was cheaper than there. Not sure this helps, but I was a bit underwhelmed with it a bit. x
