Independent teen travel after GCSEs

My DS and friends want to do a little overnight trip together after GCSEs. He’s really responsible and I’m not at all concerned about them doing something small scale in the UK. However, DS and one of his friends will only be 15 (the other 2 will be 16). Is there anything they can do without grown up supervision? The back up plan would be camping or maybe even self catering but with an adult discreetly on hand but I just wondered what others have done at a similar time.

Hotels and Airbnb don’t allow unaccompanied children I don’t think

I think youth hostels allow over 16's

Most places won't allow a booking for under 18's.
Whn we used to book hotel stays with the DC we had to pretend that there was an adult in each room

Even youth hostels will want a supervising adult for 15 yos I think.
Camping with an adult in another tent nearby maybe. I would not be happy as a lettings owner to have a group of teenage boys, no matter how sensible.

Most youth hostels won't allow under 18s in dorms. I think camping is probably the best bet for them. How are they planning to get around- walk, bike, train?

A bunch of 16 year olds wouldn't necessarily need an adult supervising- kids that age and younger walk 35/45 miles unaccompanied across Dartmoor, wild camping on the way- in the Ten Tors.

They might need the riot act reading to them re considerate behaviour on campsites, mind!

Igbink they will have trouble finding anywhere to stay without an adult.

Even way back in the 90s I couldn't make this work because under 18. In addition many places won't rent to single sex groups (I remember begging my teachers to write me a reference saying we weren't a hen do and wouldn't break the place up but I was unsuccessful).

I think adult discreetly on hand at the overnight accommodation would be best. But if you could book it some distance away and let them travel there on their own by public transport it might feel a bit like independent travel.

Over 16 but under 18 can stay in youth hostels but they’ll need to book a private room for them all.

Not sure abt the 15 year old though.
