Is Australia worth it?

so…Australia, I’m worried about all the stuff that can kill you…that there’s lots of nothing in between things of interest, and it’s a fuck of a long way away. Is it worth it?

like scenery, hiking, culture, good food, and old stuff….

I don’t think it’s for you op

I've always wondered this! I have family who live there so presumably love it but I'm not convinced, I think it's now long to takes to get there plus the cost and if it is disappointing I'd be gutted!

Agree. There is no scenery, no culture, no good food- nothing for you op 🙄

Way to misinterpret my post!

you need a holiday 😆

Fantastic scenery, very diverse types of places/cities, really good food culture.

Definitely worth it.

AzurePanda · 13/10/2025 08:52

I have no idea why British people are so obsessed with the “stuff that can kill you”z you are vanishingly unlikely to encounter any of it on a holiday. I’m Australian and have done maybe 15 trips with my British family and have travelled everywhere from the Outback, Northern Territory to Tasmania. At no point have we have any encounter with anything remotely lethal.

Assumed you were being ironic…
yes, need a holiday in Australia!

It depends what you like to do on holiday OP. The things you’ve mentioned I personally think can be better done elsewhere (New Zealand might be a better option but also very far!). I grew up in Australia, but I haven’t been back since I left. I also have never been to America, but I’ve been all over Asia and Europe.

I like beaches but I’ve been to better beaches elsewhere. From what I’ve been told from friends ‘back home’ it’s also very expensive now too!

We loved Australia, it is a long way though and depends what you are looking for. Scenery was spectacular, there was some amazing food but it was very expensive, it's huge so you do need to research well. Wildlife was the highlight for us, tree kangaroos, possum, cassowary on the beach, crocodile, wallabies, dolphins, whales, koalas etc, very friendly. Loved Great Barrier Reef and between there and Daintree rainforest, gorgeous coastline and Atherton Tablelands.

Totally worth it, loads to see and do like the national parks and the harbour at Sydney is beautiful. I've lived in Australia, my in-laws live there and we visit fairly often. In the 9+ years I've spent in the country I saw a brown snake in the outback when I was back-packing, believe I was in the Flinders Ranges, and I saw a huntsman spider on top of our car once in Sydney, but that wouldn't have killed me but was freakishly big by spider standards. Much more likely to spot a cute animal like a kangaroo if you are in more rural areas.

AzurePanda · 13/10/2025 09:52

I second that it’s really worth the long trip. Sydney is one of the world’s great cities, stunningly beautiful. Melbourne is packed with fabulous restaurants and fun neighbourhoods. You will find some of the world’s most beautiful and empty beaches. Top of Western Australia is mind blowing as is Kakadu. I personally love the northern NSW beaches and the Sapphire coast.

The nature and animals are just wonderful, Raymond Island for example where you can walk around and see endless Koalas in the wild.

Prices have gone up a lot but if you travel out of season and avoid the luxury type hotels we don’t find it too bad.

It's fabulous. I lived in Victoria, NSW and Queensland. We encountered Redback spiders in our house and living in my car dash air vents, saw a blue ring octopus, bluebottles ie Portuguese man o war (ex got stung by it), accidentally ran over a brown snake and saw box jelly fish aka snotties caught up in the protection nets in Northern Queensland. We also saw wild kangaroos, a wallaby, echidna, kookaburras, zillions of parrots, possums living in our loft, manta rays, even saw an elusive platypus. Loads to see and do especially wildlife and scenic stuff. Food is good if a little expensive for some things.

GoldDuster · 13/10/2025 11:40

It is glorious, and the longer you can spend there the better. I've lived there and visited numerous times, and haven't been got at by anything deadly yet.

I can't imagine, feeling like you do, how you'd ever get around to pushing the button to book the flights though, so I probably wouldn't worry about it and pick somewhere else you feel a bit more enthused about.

mondaytosunday · 13/10/2025 13:03

We went for a month either two little kids and it was the best trip ever. Started in Perth (meh), up to Margaret River (lovely), flew to Cairns (great), down to Sydney (loved it), a weekend in Barry (visiting friends), back to Sydney…. Honestly I didn’t see one spider and had a wonderful trip. If my DH said we need to dorms another week I’d have said ‘great’! Flying with a 20 month old and three year old not for the faint hearted though! Only negative was they had to go to bed early so evenings were restricted.

BadActingParsley · 13/10/2025 13:08

Spent a long time in New Zealand a few years ago but didn't make it over to Australia. Travelled in South America, North America, Asia, Russia, lots of Europe, Africa - but somehow Australia just hasn't been that high on my list.

Maybe it's a retirement trip so I can go for a while....

We love Australia but I probably wouldn’t have thought to go if we didn’t have family there. Was blown away the first time by the scenery, amazing food and wildlife. Never seen anything dangerous.
