Thinking of going to Edinburgh for the weekend first w/end November
any advice on where to stay - a lot hotels look pretty basic but expensive - happy to stay in an apartment but don’t know which area to look for. Any advice ?

Premier inn an Edinburgh park. It’s a short tram ride and the tram station is right across the road plus a train station.

What are your criteria? Adagio on Royal Mile or Marriott aparthotel in Quartermile are reasonably spacious. There are several Premier Inn, Travelodge, Holiday Inn options. Nowhere will be cheap though!

I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express on Cowgate last November. It was a decent price and the rate included breakfast. The location was about midway between Holyrood and the castle. Cowgate runs parallel to the Royal Mile.
I have also stayed in a serviced apartment near Haymarket, but we preferred the hotel.

Destiny Scotland have some very good appartments - especially in New Town. We had a lovely one fairly close to the station and Harvey nics and St Andrews Square Garden. We thought it was a good location. They have various ones to choose from. For a hotel, I’d look at the Hoxton. Great brand.

We were lucky to stay at The Caledonian it was very special

If you mean air b and b, the city has cracked down on them over the past year and they’re not that plentiful any more. That’s one of the reasons that hotels are expensive, there’s a lot of demand. Anywhere in the city centre will work, also Leith is great in its own right and there’s a tram to the centre, Stockbridge is a short walk into town. If it’s only a weekend I wouldn’t go much further out of the centre.

Close to Waverley station really makes it easy for a weekend trip if you are arriving by train. The appartment we used was via booking.com or direct.

@Itsbeenalongoldday New Town is the Georgian area close to Waverley station. It’s a flat area and is attractive. Has good communication links via Princes Street or you can have a good walk! The Hoxton is near Haymarket Station so not as central, but it depends what you want.

Itsbeenalongoldday · 02/10/2025 12:57

@OhDear111 thanks
don’t mind a good walk might look for an apartment in new town!

have stayed in ibis styles, St Andrews square- excellent location, but prices do vary a lot depending on time of year. We usually go in feb and it’s pretty good value.

I really like Market St Hotel. Especially for short trips - it’s right across the street from the station. With kids we’ve enjoyed air bnbs in Stockbridge and Leith

Itsbeenalongoldday · 02/10/2025 23:13

Thanks everyone lots to look at

If you stay near haymarket station its much cheaper and just a very short train ride right into waverley in the middle of the city . We stayed in a lovely airband b there .

Scotland are playing at Murrayfield that weekend so that won't be helping hotel prices and availability. What sort of budget were you hoping for?
If you're driving also make sure your accommodation has parking as on-street parking is £££££ and large parts of the city have resident's permit parking only.

A good tip is to look at the hotels and B &Bs on and just off relatively central roads with good bus traffic. The Edinburgh bus and tram system is excellent - although the city is compact, so much of it is walkable.

Murrayfield area is nice - near zoo - and there’s a main road with lots of hotels and B & Bs in large Georgian houses. Same goes for road called Craigmillar Park / Minto Street in area called Newington on south side. Major bus routes. Liked Newington as can walk into town easily too straight along the one main road all the way to the Balmoral hotel/ Waverley station on Princes Street in 20 minutes or walk through the lovely Meadows park area into town. You’re also close to Arthur’s Seat, the Commonwealth Pool and Blackford Hill.

Edinburgh also has some areas - a bit like Clifton in Bristol if you know those parts - that are like little villages within the City. Stockbridge is lovely and may have some fancy B & Bs or there’s Dean Village - must have a walk around the last at least even if you don’t stay there. Morningside is another good area.
