Unexpected time off from work - should I travel even though it's a stretch?

I unexpectedly have around two weeks off work between jobs. It is unpaid.

I recently went on a big holiday and have my other trips planned for the next year, including going away in about 10 weeks time. I rarely get two weeks off at once so I feel I should make the most and go and travel, but financial it would be a bit of a stretch. I could dip into savings a bit and spend 2-3k on a trip somewhere - but should I?

I would travel, don't often get two weeks off. But I'd go somewhere cheap so really flights are the main costs e.g Laos.

Go for it, I would! But since you've had a trip and with more in the pipeline, I'd stick to cheap n cheerful and stick to Europe. Eastern Europe by train would be inexpensive and fascinating. It's something I plan to do early in Spring before the crowds build up - hopefully. Places like Bosnia Herzegovina, Macedonia, Montenegro and maybe Albania.

I love to travel but honestly I wouldn't in your situation. Two weeks isn't that long, it would be different if it was 6 weeks or something and you could consider a proper long haul adventure. I'd use the two weeks to rest, read, exercise, get the house sorted, batch cook meals etc so I was all organised for my new job.

Can you compromise? A short UK trip for under £1000 (or whatever you can afford comfortably), the rest of the time on jobs you've put off and books/TV/day trips you haven't got around to.

I’m addicted to travelling but wouldn’t do it in your circumstances.

Maybe channel your travel energy into planning your 10 weeks time trip, I find that works well when I’m debating booking an extra trip.

Is it just you? I would look at Skyscanner to see where there are cheap flights and then booking dot com for accommodation. My dd and her boyfriend recently did 5 nights in Porto for 300 euros each - plus spends. This was no frills but they had a fab time. If you could stretch that a bit you could still have a nice trip without spending ££££s

Yeah I would! Pick somewhere that’s going to be cheap for food etc like Eastern Europe

Crushed23 · 03/10/2025 23:38

Yes, definitely! I make the most of any time off work. Keep us posted on where you choose. 😊

I’m just back from travelling top to bottom of Portugal. The weather is glorious there right now, travelling by train is very cheap and it’s very easy to eat and drink inexpensively too. How about treating yourself to a week there and a week at home to catch up on stuff ?
