I have questions about going to Naples

Considering booking a short break for myself and my 17yr old DD next Easter. I have always wanted to go to Naples, and she is massively into ancient history, so it's high on our list. Second-guessing myself a bit because of a conversation with DS' 19 yr old girlfriend, who says she felt really unsafe there. So, if you've been, was that your experience? Would you recommend Naples as a short-break (and if you would, give me tips)? Info about trips to Pompeii especially welcome (would prefer not to hire a car, but I could do).
Despite how this might read, I'm a pretty competent and confident traveller, but DD is quite anxious and I want her to have a nice time. Berlin is our other option (I know it pretty well and could design a very happy itinerary for the two of us, but we are tempted by Naples).

Herculaneum was on my list of places I wanted to visit and we flew to Naples, 60eueo for taxi transfer to ercolano for two nights, went to the ruins day one and Naples the second day. Then went to Meta (close to sorrento) for a further three nights where we did day trips to positano and capri and enjoyed sunsets and good food and wine.

Naples station was ginormous but just stayed aware of surroundings and belongings .

Yeah Naples station is gigantic, I’ve seen smaller airports. We got the train in from Sorrento then had to find the luggage storage place, then later the bus to the airport - we were walking for ages!

We (me, DH, teenage DDs) went to Naples a couple of years ago and had a brilliant time! Stayed there several nights. Didn't feel unsafe, even walking around at night - maybe because we live just outside London and I work there, so I'm used to busy, crowded, noisy and taking care of your belongings at all times so they don't get nicked. Yes it's not very clean and there is lots of graffiti but it's a great city.

Train to Pompeii is definitely the way to go. Don't hire a car!

I went two years ago and loved it. It’s loud and hot and the traffic is bad and don’t go wandering down alleys drunk at night….

But it’s also surrounded by gorgeous scenery, the bay is lovely, the food amazing, the people passionate and helpful.

Don’t be an idiot, avoid being robbed by being sensible and you’ll be fine.

We had a week there and loved it. One day in Herculaneum/Vesuvius, one day in Pompeii, and the rest of the time in Naples. We considered going down the coast or to an island but ran out of time.

I know it has a bad reputation, but we didn't see or experience anything unpleasant. Some rubbish here and there, but it's the same in the UK these days!

I really enjoyed Naples, but my husband did get his wallet pickpocketed on the metro which did make feel I needed to be cautious all the time. We did a couple of nights on the Amalfi coast and then 5 nights in Naples. From Naples we did Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvius by train, we did them on 3 separate days. I felt like we covered Herculaneum fairly comprehensively with the audio guide, but even after 6 hours there were bits of Pompeii we had missed. We went Easter time and the weather was good, but jumper type temperatures every day except the day we went to Pompeii, when it poured with rain all day. For Vesuvius I booked the national park entrance tickets on the website and then we took the public bus from Pompeii up to the entrance for a few euros. In Naples itself we did the catacombs as mentioned but someone else, the archaeology museum, San severo chapel, Naples underground, the cathedral and all the murals in the quaterri spagnioli.

Felt unsafe there tbh! Stay in Sorrento! So lovely and a short hop to Pompeii and Herculaneum. There’s a great museum in Naples but it’s mostly art history rather than ancient and I’d say you can happily skip it

I presume you're not thinking of MANN? Three floors of ancient archaeological finds, mostly from Herculaneum and Pompeii.

We have booked a villa in Sant Agnello for this time next year. It’s meant to be close to the railway station so easy to get into Sorrento. Plan to visit Capri, Pompei, Naples, maybe Amalfi. We will be there for a week but don’t like to be rushing around.

LucyPiglet · 04/10/2025 00:13

Like others I would recommend staying in Sorrento instead and doing day trips from here. Maybe dip your toe into the water in Naples and just have 1
day and night there - worth visiting for the pizza alone! But definitely not my favourite city. I never felt unsafe there but i didn’t like Naples in the same way as I do Florence or Rome for example
