Accomodation around Split - last minute

Morning, I have just booked return flights to Split for 3 of us for 10 days. Never been, so it's a fast learning curve. Having spent hours yesterday looking for appropriate accommodation and getting more confused can anyone recommend somewhere? I have 10 days to occupy late teens and now wondering how expensive this is going to cost me.

Youngsters like being outdoors / don't like reading about history. Wondering whether I can save money by only taking public transport to places and not hiring a car. Would also like to visit the Krka National Park but looking on Air BnB / hostels am cheaper to pay for the whole 10 nights around Split and pay extra for 1 night around Skradin and possibly visit Krka either for 2 days or Siblenik on way back?

Still to plan how to occupy them. However, criteria -

2 bedrooms if possible though a sofa bed and double would be ok.
The accommodation will just be used as a crash pad so views not necessary and I would hope cheaper / safe accommodation would allow me to spend more on experiences (ideas welcome).

Having read many of the previous threads, it looks like food could be expensive so again somewhere that I am close to a supermarket / can perhaps cook a meal a day would be helpful.

Finally, hoping to be able to get to it by taking public transport from the airport if possible but willing to consider anything.

Thanks!!

We went to Split a couple of years ago with our teens and our holiday was very water based. We stayed Podstrana on the beach where there are lots of paddle boards to hire, boat trips, fishing, island hopping. We needed a car - it’s only 10km to Split and there is public transport but it was slow and taxis were hit and miss.

My kids loved zip lines in Omis, and hiking up to the Diocletian's Palace in the hills where they filmed some GoT stuff. I don’t remember the supermarkets being that expensive and they have lots of bakeries dotted around which do cheap pastries and bread which are great for lunch.

You can venture into the national parks fairly easily but I think you’d need a car, I’d do a room near Split for the duration and then a nights B&B at the lakes.

Thank you. Sounds fab and I had looked at the zip lines in Omis. Sounds like I should book them. On my own I'm not keen to hire a car, partly confidence though I am sure I would be fine, but I also do pretty much all the driving of the youngsters while at home - over 1500 miles a month. A break from driving would be lovely! I'll have a look though about hiring one for perhaps a few days. Much appreciated - particularly the zip lines as I had wondered about them but wondered if worth the cost.

10 days in Split is quite a long time, would you consider splitting your time between Split and an island or two? October will be out of season, so you'll need to check what will still be open. IME food is not expensive, it's just not cheap for Brits like it was before they adopted the euro.

Yes, happy to go to different places. Have been looking at taking the train to Zagreb or hop to neighbouring countries but flights are now on and out of Split and everywhere else seems to be mainly by bus for hours....

Split itself is larger than I expected. Old town is lovely but suburbs pretty ugly (the view you get on the road from the airport). I think if your teens aren’t into history then rather than stay in the old town you may be better staying just outside and visiting Split itself by boat/bus. For short distances Ubers are really easy. The coast between Split and Omiš is beautiful and there are a few places you could base yourself along this road. Trogir is lovely too.

To add to poster above, It’s Klis Fortress in the hills which was used in GOT. I think an underground area of the Diocletian’s Palace was also used, but this is in Split itself.

We found the Konzum (?) supermarket in Split itself very expensive, but it may have just been the particular things we bought. Lidl was fine. We didn’t find eating out particularly expensive but I wouldn’t eat out more than once per day, and prices have gone up since they went into the Euro.
