2 teens and me?

Over the last 5 years I have had a primary cancer, a recurrance and I am now stage 4. I will start chemotherapy again very soon and this time it will have no end. Before I start I have a short window of time to take my two girls, age 14 and 16, away on my own. We do not have a big budget and I am thinking I could manage 2-3 nights. We are based in the midlands. We can fly or get to the eurostar. Any ideas of where to go and stay welcome. I want it to be as special as I can. x

What is your budget?

Forgottenmyphone · 30/09/2025 08:50

Disneyland? It’s super easy to get to via Eurostar, perfect for 3 nights and the sky’s the limit when making it special.

Also super easy to fly from BHX to Charles de Gaulle airport and taking the TGV to the site. Saves driving to the Eurostar.

Thank you but we have been to Disneyland three times before as a whole family. I just wanted a trip with the two girls. Budget up to about £2000.

Sorry to hear about your situation. I hope you feel well through the chemo and can continue to travel, but I understand your desire for a memorable trip. If you have the energy for sightseeing my suggestions would be Amsterdam, Athens or Rome. All memorable trips.

tanstaafl · 30/09/2025 10:36

if you’re saying 2 or 3 nights , may I ask if that also means you don’t want to be on your feet for any length of time?
i think people will be suggesting places that might involve a lot of walking.

Whatcaniwear · 30/09/2025 10:56

At the moment I am okay. I finished my last round of Chemo 3 months ago. I have just had surgery but am okay. This will be the last few weeks I am okay, hense why I want to do something now, whilst I can. I want to make memories for the girls.

I'm sorry to read about your situation. For a holiday, have a look at Futuroscope in France. I'm not sure of the travel arrangements, but it's a fantastic experience. x

City break

barcelona

tanstaafl · 30/09/2025 13:53

OP, would special mean amazing sights together ( e.g. the Colosseum ) or taking it easy being together on a beach ?

Cinaferna · 30/09/2025 13:55

How about a long weekend in Budapest? You can visit the gorgeous thermal outdoor baths (there are several); go for a river cruise along the Danube, get off at Margret island to hire those big one-family bikes and cycle around the musical fountain and up to the Japanese garden. Try the famous cakes in one of the glittery old fancy cafes.

If they like history you can visit the WW2 secret cave hospital or the House of Terror or the old Communist statue park. You can explore the covered markets, look at the high fashion shops on Andrassy Avenue. If they like animals, there's a lovely bear sanctuary where you can hand feed bears - the guided tour takes you there and back and includes entrance fees, a pot of honey and a very long spoon each, and an ice cream afterwards.

You can also get the Children's Railway (run by children in the communist era - still functioning and run by teenagers at weekends) up to the top of the hill and a chairlift down.

There are lots of little squares and parks, riverside and hill walks to just wander around and admire the beauty of the city and take loads of Instagrammable photos (Fisherman's Bastion overlooking the Danube with Parliament on the far side, is good.) If you go to the Ruin Bars in the afternoon, they often let teens in for tea or coffee or non-alcoholic drinks. DC loved it there.

There's also a zoo and petting cafes - loads to do.

Budapest sound perfect! Thank you. Just what I was looking looking for. Any ideas on accomodation?

We love exploring and would get very bored on a beach!

I think I stayed in the intercontinental which was lovely

I was going to suggest Budapest too. There's the thermal baths, zoo, flipper museum and a selfie museum with a huge ball pool for adults. A great place for teens.

Budapest is great. Eating out is pretty cheap too (IMO), including stalls where you can get Chimney cake and Langos (like pizzas but with sour cream and cheese on top).

We stayed in an AirB&B not far from the synagogue. It seemed pretty central / convenient.
