Why is it that Brits love the beach and swimming in the sea so much?

Because it's awesome?

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 29/09/2025 11:48

It’s not a Brit specific thing

HundredMilesAnHour · 29/09/2025 11:48

They’re not.

lessee167 · 29/09/2025 11:48

People all over the world love the sea and the beach!

saveforthat · 29/09/2025 11:49

Why not? Because it's lovely and relaxing? I was shocked when I first visited Barbados many years ago that most locals don't/can't swim and don't want a house near the beach as the sand gets in to everything.

😂Can't beat a mass generalisation.

GreenWheat · 29/09/2025 11:51

Whilst it's true that beaches are popular with British people, it's by no means unique to them. As PP have said, loads of people like to be by the sea, especially if they live in a country that doesn't have good beaches itself.

TheNightingalesStarling · 29/09/2025 11:51

Because its nicer than pool swimming

fndwithasd · 29/09/2025 11:52

Probably because our beaches are dirty and the water is brown and now full of sewage.

This.

I don’t know a single person that obsessed with swimming in the sea.

I enjoy swimming in the sea. But only if the sea is warm and therefore, a few thousand miles away.

Yes, this!

TulipTuesday · 29/09/2025 11:54

I’m a Brit and I hate a beach. HTH.

magicscares · 29/09/2025 11:56

We are a nation of islands, perhaps there’s a link. The sea is very soothing for many & has a positive impact on emotional health for many. I lived inland for many years & longed to live near the coast. I love it.

dairydebris · 29/09/2025 11:57

Negative ions in sea air improves the mood.

Sounds woo but actually true.

Also the sea and sky are just beautiful and ever changing. You cant get bored with them.

I love the beach 🥰

Poirot1983 · 29/09/2025 11:58

I don't think they are. I grew up by and learnt to swim in the sea but most of my friends didn't visit the beach much. My great uncle was very ahead of his time, though and used to go in for a dip every morning. I think his generation appreciated the health benefits of the beach.

I went for a swim in the sea this summer and it was blissful. I wish I lived a little closer to it so that I could do it more often. Swimming pools come nowhere near close to the experience.

I think it's one of those things that people got into during lockdown and I can understand the appeal.

PollyBell · 29/09/2025 11:59

No idea some beaches are great some not so much, i will never get the fights over the sun lounges though

Chewbecca · 29/09/2025 11:59

I love it, but am another who only likes it when the conditions are perfect (i.e. clear, warm sea).
It's relaxing, makes you feel good, you can do nothing but lay and read a book all day with no guilt, it's escapism.

PrimeTimeNow · 29/09/2025 12:00

I love the beach.

Love to see and hear the sea - it’s so relaxing.
Love warm soft sand for the same reason

It’s all just so natural. A pleasure that’s been enjoyed for all time.

CatHairEveryWhereNow · 29/09/2025 12:08

I don't think they are more than anyone else.

Also don't think sea swimming is actually that big - it's more beach and paddling.

However beach days/hoildays do tend to be cheaper than city breaks.

ReceiveIt · 29/09/2025 12:12

Why would you not love the beach? Stunning scenery, interesting and varied wildlife, calming, kids can play for hours without missing screens, and people watching.

I love every season of the beach. Scorching summers, cold and blustery winters, and fresh spring mornings. There really is no better joy in life than sipping a coffee and watching your dog zoom over the sand and play in the waves.

This one is a double whammy, generalisation and hyperbole - obsessed? That is a big word.

Are there nations out there who don’t like a nice beach? I mean, Australia, California and South of France are quite fond of the beach - although I’ve not done a broad survey.

Why is it that Brits love the beach and swimming in the sea so much?

I've just come back from my holiday this weekend and we were at a resort with very few Brits - majority French, quite a few German and least represented were eastern European, Irish and Brits. Everyone was in the sea on the smallish beach we were on.
