Delta carry on luggage

Taking Delta to the US from the UK and note that carry on luggage allowance is 56x35x23.
The width is smaller than Ryanair’s
55x40x20 although the overall volume is almost the same (1cm difference).
I’d really rather not have to purchase a case that is 5cm narrower.
Has anyone travelled Delta and was your case strictly within the dimensions?

I fly delta fairly often and have literally never been stopped to have my carry on size checked (or seen anyone stopped!) despite frequently overpacking a backpack so it’s not technically within size (but would be if I were to pull out a jumper and wear it 😂)

How long are you going for?. If its a week I'd check it rather than carry it onboard.

They can be quite strict going to the US and also go by weight of the case.

I would consider checking in your case rather than carrying it on board like most people seem to do these days. If you were one of the last to board the aircraft then there may be no space left for your case to go in the overhead locker.

It can take a long time to get through immigration at your US destination and you could well find your bag is on the floor by the baggage carousel when you arrive there. Also checking it into the hold means you do not then have a problem with volume of toiletries etc.

I’m going for four nights for business and I would rather not pay £100 more to check luggage.
Hoping they don’t check the case!

I would look at Delta’s website but I thought the first bag was free of charge to be checked into the hold. They usually charge for additional checked luggage.

No, for my ticket I pay for any checked

Delta is quite laid back with handluggage, 1 carry on, they don't measure it just check it visually for size and a personal bag.
They don't even have a weight restriction as long as you can lift it into the overhead lockers yourself. I'd stick to around 10kg though , imagine if it fell on someone's head. In the worst case scenario you can pay for it at the check in desk, the charge is exactly the the same as online. On full flights they let you often check carry on for free too. You can't check in anything like laptops etc containing lithium batteries, has to be in carry on.

Hoping it will be fine. It’s the same case I’ve just used flying Ryanair to Italy and we know how fierce they are.
There really needs to be just one universal carry on size.

Just to update, had to go to check in counter for boarding pass as it wasn’t issued online. I declined the offer to check in my carry on for free so she just gave me a tag for it and my rucksack, seems she barely looked at them. I guess they’re trained to spot cases that couldn’t fit in the overhead locker.
Good thing I didn’t check the case as extraordinarily there was no queue at JFK customs and I breezed through in 2 mins.
