Slovenia

We are thinking of going to Slovenia for 12 days this summer with our teens who will be 14 and 17 at the time. Does anyone have any reccomendations? I have been looking at organised trips but they are pretty expensive. My husband seems keener on Italy but I have heard great things about Slovenia and it seems a bit more compact!

I guess it depends on your likes?

I've travelled through Slovenia (with my late husband towing the caravan, and found everyone to be lovely and friendly.

We stayed at a caravan site in Ptuj for a couple of nights each way. It was very family friendly with a lovely swimming pool. We were the only Brits there at the time - there were German and Polish family groups staying there and everyone got along fine. This was some time ago, not long after Slovenia had joined the EU.

The Slovene border guards and customs officials were lovely. We certainly noticed the difference when we later crossed into Croatia where they were much sterner.

Other than that, we only ever stayed in Bled - great if you like to wander about your self and to go for walks, both on the flat and up hills.

We had family friends who went to the seaside every year - Portorož was mentioned - and they thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Their daughter was a teen at the time and found plenty to do.

Apologies that this is not very informative, but I thought that a post might help to boost traffic.

Thanks!! I think there are some earlier threads on here but other main one seemed to suggest going to trieste instead

Do both!
We flew in to Venice and out of Trieste.
2 nights Venice
5 nights lake bohinj
2 nights Ljubljana
4 nights piran
1 night trieste
Easy to do by public transport if you prefer not to hire a car.

You can't go to Slovenia and not go to Bled.
I've been on a day trip to Venice from there, it was a long day though!

You could consider Friuli-Venezia Giulia, the Italian region to the west of Slovenia. Trieste is the regional capital and remains its Austro-Hungarian feel. It also has two resorts, Lignano (big, noisy, popular with young people) and Grado (smaller family-friendly, Venetian historic centre). It has the Dolomites for walking, with Forni di Sopra a good starting point for many - the chairlift operates in the summer. Udine is an overlooked gem of a small town, with a magnificent Venetian main square. It has wine in the collio, running alongside the Slovenian border, with farmstay (agriturismi) accommodation among the vine yards. There is the Alpi-Adria cycle path and nature reserves along the coast between Grado and the industrial town of Monfalcone. Very few British tourists, if that's a factor for you.

We stayed in Kranska Gora. Lake Bled was too busy. There's a lot of cycle, routes that go parallel to the roads but separated by a few metres of tress so really nice. We had a vacation and did Lake Bohinj, cable car there. Also drove into Italy as there are 2 little lakes to walk round in the mountains.
