Salt lake city

Not really a holiday - but I will be in Salt Lake City in Utah next spring for around 6 days for a work event. I will have a couple of days free before the event and a day after. Will not have a car. Any recommendations of must-sees, places to eat, shopping gratefully received!

There’s a company called South West Adventure tours. I’d have a look at what’s on offer for day trips. Looks interesting. Haven’t used them though. Visitsaltlake.com has lots of ideas. Maybe art galleries? You might like historic sites connected to Mormon culture too plus a church or two.

I was in SLC last year for work, it’s a lovely place and the people are so friendly.

City Creek Mall is good for shopping, but to be honest the city for us was really walkable, so I’d recommend exploring the place.

One word of advice, take your passport when going to bars/restaurants as some either won’t let you in without it or serve you alcohol.

Really? Even though I am clearly 30 years over the minimum drinking age??

Yep, I’m mid 50s, as were my colleagues and we still had to produce them. It wasn’t to do with age I think. In one place we went, the locals had to have their ID scanned.

Interestingly, we never once came across anyone who’d had a few too many and there wasn’t any aggression or trouble anywhere we went.

I am not a big drinker and many of the people I will be working/socialising with are Mormon and don't drink. As long as I can get coffee.

I think many Mormons don't drink coffee as it has caffeine in it. Although, you should be able to find coffee, I would have thought.

I didn’t find a good one there, apart from McDonalds by the hotel. Offices I was working in, you couldn’t get tea or coffee, so spent 2 working without caffeine.

RampantIvy · 18/09/2025 14:05

To be fair, I think McDonald's coffee is pretty decent.

When exactly in spring are you going? Do you ski?

WhereAreMyAirpods · 18/09/2025 15:19

Early March and I don't ski!

I was going to say ski!

@WhereAreMyAirpods I suspect you can take in coffee to USA? We took tea bags recently.

Nothing to do with caffeine. The Book of Mormon prohibits “hot drinks” so most members of the LDS church don’t drink tea or coffee. The drink caffeinated soda as there is no mentioning of caffeine being prohibited.

It’s normal here (I live in the US) to have to show ID for alcohol no matter what your age is. I live in Florida, and I’ve seen people who are clearly over 60 being carded for alcohol purchases.

Oh that's interesting.
I shared a flat with two Mormons many years ago, and they didn't drink tea or coffee and told me it was because they contained caffeine. They used to drink barleycup instead.

WhereAreMyAirpods · 20/09/2025 19:38

That makes sense as the Mormons I know do drink Diet Coke or Dr Pepper. Wonder if iced coffees are a thing.
